Tonsil Cancer - Whirlwind Week

Hi All

Firstly Hats Off to the NHS in Wales, they have been super amazing since my diagnosis on New Years Eve. Thank you all

The title of the post is Whirlwind Week and this is why:

New Years Eve I have a phone call from ENT confirming tonsil cancer.  Very apologetic confirmed over the phone.  Wants me in for a biopsy.   Later the same day I get calls from ward team and covid test centre booking appointments.

Monday 4th January i have a covid test at 9.30am. Results back same day, negative for Covid19.  On route to test centre call from pre assessment team asking me to go in straight after my covid test for my biopsy pre assessment.   Forgot to mention biopsy booked for 7th January.

Tuesday 5th January have an ultrasound at 9.30am and an MRI ar 11.00am.  The ultrasound was an external ultrasound of my neck. They decided to take two needle biopsies of lymph nodes which took some doing as the nodes were so solid they couldn't get needle in... Thank goodness for local anesthetic :)

From ultrasound they decided to send me for a 3d scan of my jaw.  This was done primarily in case I need any teeth removed pre radiotherapy treatment.  Apparently radiotherapy can cause your back teeth to crumble.  Don't panic not everyone has this done.  i believe it totally depends on size, position of tumour and the amount of radiotherapy you need.

After the jaw scan I went straight for my MRI.  Think I  had two 10 minute sessions,  the second 10 with dye injected into my blood.  I had also had this done for a CT scan on 18th December.

Wednesday 6th January day off.  Which I used to eat as many nice things as possible :)

Thursday 7th January 07.30am its minus 4 degrees c and I'm back at the hospital with my overnight bag ready for another biopsy, I was told to expect to be in hospital overnight.  Due to covid we have to wait at the entrance.  Just 3 of us, asked lots of covid related questions and temperature checked before being escorted to the clean ward.

The ENT surgeon comes to see me to explain the procedure.  Remember everyone is different.   So for me they are going to remove the good tonsil and send it for tests.  What? Not the bad tonsil?  The reason for this is because when you have cancer in one tonsil it is pretty much a done deal that you will get itin the other.   Also by leaving the cancerous tonsil in it allows for more treatment options.  If they cut it out there will only be one treatment path.

During the tonsillectomy they also took biopsies of my bad tonsil and my tongue.   After the op ENT told me that it would take about 7 days for the results so they expect to be calling my Wife and I in a week on Wednesday.

I was allowed to go home as long as I had eaten something, drunk something and had a pee.  I was home by 7pm the same day.

Sunday 10th January its 6am and I am sat in bed writing this post.  Next to me is a glass of water which I sip all night, my 6am pills and a lip balm.  My bottom lip took a battering during surgery and is very swollen and sore.   The cancerous side of my throat and shoulder is still painful and the right side is even more painful from the tonsillectomy.  Even my lymph nodes seem to be complaining  :)

But you know what, I don't feel sorry for myself,  I don't feel sad.  I'm going to lose weight, but hey I'm 5ft 6inch and 13 and a half stone (male) i could do with shedding a few pounds ;)

I know this is just the start of a long hard journey,  but I'm ready... bring it on I say!

  • afternoon

there is a slight breeze today in fact got up early and there was some dew around. the sun is out now and it is warm again so will need to get hose out again later.

hubby excited footie starts later so i will be retiring early tonight lol.

webinar went well very intense lasted to hours an hour longer than i thought! about animals emotions and how our behaviourist group analyse them and determine whether they are pessimistic, positive, sad,d epressed and how to improve hedonic budgets etc. have a slight headache just thinking about it lol. definately not doing anything else today!!

i haved just come to settle and rest for an hour before i do tea and three cats the bengal boys have come to join me very cute. i think they are all tired too probably from listening to my webinar and deciding whether they are happy or could be improved lol.

the grass is getting longer in the field out the back so the mini mafia are finding it difficult to play their footie because they cannot see each other in the long stems. it is more guess where that oice is coming from and run in what they think is the right direction.- this is why the game is planned for the road in the middle of the night when hopefully it is all quiet. the chilkdren are finding the field great fun for playing pranks on their parents and hde and seek.

got three more yakons today apparently they come up like shrubs with a quiet nice flower rather than a vegetable as such but you do eat the root as previously mentioned after a frost has developed. they are soaking at the moment in the sink before i plant them. - fingers crossed these are in a better condition than the ones from suttons.

hope everyone is getting some healing rays and doing ok.

keep strong as Al says and keep smiling, thinking of you all. x

  • Hi Elona

Hope you are well and coping with the medication routine is it the end of this month you have appt with consultant, all ok here I have very sore mouth and throat and now I can't eat solids but no tube fitted I'm told I'm doing very well, I don't feel to bad in myself the salivas and mucous a bit of a nightmare and I have a dressing on my neck cause its sore and weepy now but all in all I'm ok,  my treatment finishes on Wed so near the finish now and I'm still smiling just lol

    Alli x

  • Hi

Alli I am so glad to hear from you have been wondering how things are. (I even get concerned when i dont hear as i treat you all as friends). I am glad the treatment is going well so pleaased. you must be relieved thet you are near the end and the light is shinning! if you look back Sam mentioned a cream that is good to use on your neck if that helps and I think something was mentioned for the mucus too. I am glad you are still smiling. Keep us in touch x

Weather still nice this morning and flowersa re still blooming and growing so garden is getting very pretty. I love looking to see what new things are coming up. The little plugs have developed and the marigolds are blooming.

finished the adult version of the hedgehog adoptee letters yesterday still have to do the youngsters ones ready for July then i can concentrate on the research and book again. Miss having the hedgehogs outside but secretly glad at the moment in this heat they would have needed quite a lot of help keeping cool.

Have a few more weeks for my appointment to see what the plan is and whether they can do anything or not. Fuego has moments of inflammation when it gets bigger then better days when it reduces in size. throat has an area that feels like a scab or constriction that occasionally makes swallowing awkward. i dont know if this is the second area that was left or expansion of first. Like everyone my journey is continuing albeit on a different path. Still tired and having to take things slowly like everyone this weather really affects me too. Have only managed to clean half my room so will do a bit more later when hubby watches his footie.

Mini mafia are working up to the evening match. there are banners going up and flags of each family being stuck up through the soil. Humans are trippin gover these sticks as they suddenly appear in front of them! the wifes are baking cakes and making loads of sanwiches - no oranges for these sportsmen hahaha. the children are getting excited and a bit hyper all of them have ordered their shirts ready. quite a few deliveries have arrived with seats and tables ready to go on field later - could be a bit of a problem as there is corn being grown there but then they may put them round the edges. the bravardo of the men is something to listten to the phrase - all talk comes to mind !!! expectation and excitement is high!

hope everyone else is doing ok and getting the suns rays - keep smiling x

  • morning

well hubby getting a bit nervous England play later lol. what o earth do people see in footie lol. the cats arent bothered either lol. We had to ply with pedro at 9am latest because today is supposed to be realy hot so its definately an indoor day today. hopefully will finish clearing my room nd tidying it up so i can move to another room. sounds bad doesnt that lol but thi is  things left over from making the spare room.

started a new series on netflix shadow and bone - not bad keeping me entertained !

well the mini mafia football went well last night or t least that is what they are all saying!! the visitors arrived in a large sharabang amongst a lot of whistling and boos!!! they came out all cocky bravado, etc there was another sharabang with visitors wifes and friends to cheer them on - they bought a smaller van load of food and booze. the home team were all psycked up they had been at it all day parading up and down warming up etc. the game was on!! first half was all defence it was prretty slow and there were jeers from the crowd - come on - come on - boring etc then all of a sudden one minute after half time when people were beginning to wnder if anything wa going to improve a tackle came from the visitors that sent the midfielder over there followed a punch up the referee came running over and rd carded four members of the home team and six of the visitors what a disaster!!!! penalty shoot out - yay goal scored by the honme team loads of cheering then suddenly they were not looking and the visitors got a goal back - more cheering - whistle blows time up!!! thankfully for that and a few more black eyes shaking hands and food and drink served. party time!!! music blaring out until all hours people fell asleep where they fell over and it became apparent the visitors were not going to get home tonight!!! wifes of the home team went back to raid the butchers to get plenty of bacon and eggs for breakfast for them all. - that is when they could all muster waking up !!!!

finished the under 8 year old hedgehog adoption pckages last night yay so thats been up loadded.

hope everyone is ok and getting to enjoy the sun again.

    take carre keep smiling x

  • morning all

another wonderful and hot day today. no breeze today so seems even hotter than usual. dogs have been in and out so hopefully will be tired and cats are doing what cats do just lying around lol.

hoping everyone is ok Al, Sam, Alli, Judy.

will need to get the hose out again later, when hubby watching his footie as usual.

mini mafia are recovering from their bash at the weekend. the wifes made a superb cooked breakfast for everyone then granda made sure the boys cleaned up behind the visitors after they left, much to their disappointment. it was not easy since the corn had grown even more and it was hard trying to find all those thrown beer cans! no casualties thankfully just a few bruises and sore heads. (i hasten to add not just from the beer consumotion but also from the head bashing from the wifes! who said they just do not know when to stop!!). the kids thought it was all funny their dads getting the ear bashing and the men were quite sheepish for a day. (they are secretly planning the next game!).

new yakon plants have arrived and are planted if these do not survive i wont bother again becasue they will not be suitable despite having good compost etc. the rest of the garden is doing well and the marigolds are the latest to show their colours.

the pigeons were the latest birds to squabble over the bird table yesterday - there were four of them wanting the table at one time and then two ended up on fence showing shadows in my room. Rum tum tried to attack one of the shadows was so funny. he ran at it on the wall and slid down the wall because there was nothing to land on lol.

have a good day keep safe and well keep smiling x

  • evening

but late today dont really know where the day has gone to be honest!

quite exciting today got my grandads marriage certificate and it gices his army number and that he was a driver so hoping we can look this up also when he left he had been a messenger iam presuming this is someone who runs back and forth giving messages but again need to look this up. when he was anlisted he was living at home still in wales in Griffithston and had been a steel worker. its quite amazing what information you can get just from one certificate. it also gives my grandmas army number too in the ATS cook.

no energy to do the decorating this has gone to the side until it cools down. but i did a little cleaning out again yesrerday found a top i had not seen in ages lol got hidden in bottom wardrobe lol. - sounds like i have loads of clothes but believe me i dont - iam not one for fashion or outfits quite scuffy really my mum is often ashamed of me even at my grand age lol.

it is quite warm in my room now but then it is not suprising since there re five cats on the bed and a dog on the floor!! pedro took one look and disappeared!!! i do love these evenings though when the sun goes down late feel i have more of a day and its often cooler so nice. ]

hope everyone is doing ok i havent heard from some people for ages hoping its because you are having well earned breaks and nothing more.

    take care keep smiling x

  • afternoon all

hot day today waiting for the thunderstoerms that we are promised about midnight tonight!! the garden will certainly need it we wait with anticipation to see if they are any good or not lol.

mini mafia are celebrating with an enmasse picnic on the field - distancing of course in their household groups but sharing via a game of roundeers. unfortunately cousin susan got hit on the head with a ball and had to be taken of to be nursed - she will end up with a lovely bruise to match the lump thatis already starting to appear! sister june got tripped up running from the first to the second point. brother michael hit the ball so hard it went through a greenhouse window on the new estate and they had to stelathfully retrieve it before they got noticed!. the picnic was gorgeous there were so many sandwiches - ofcourse dainty ones with the crusts removed and cucumber sandwiches too. others include tuna and mayonnaise, tomato and cheese, egg and salad cream. home made scothc eggs and pickle meat pies, hard boiled eggs (taken from the local hen house), crisps and pretzels. apples, bananas, oranges and ice cream were aplenty. then later on in the afternoon there was scones with strawberry jam and cream and of course an english cuppa!! the mini mafia considered themselves to be sophisticated!! after a huge lunch the families got out their sun cream and deck chairs and laid back to relax, sunglasses on, cream of and a radio blaring in the back ground. it was glorious and could not be better. big umbrellas covered the babies to prevent them over heating and their was a little paddling pool for the little uns and a larger one for the adults who wanted a dunk. chairs were also being put out around the filed for the watch later on tht night so the families could gather again to watch the expected thunder display. (and the wine and beer was in the cooler ready).

the guys and pedro are lazing around joining their mum who has no intention of doing anything today!! too hot and too tired! did not help that rolo got me up early today and my brain was going over time so it was hard getting to sleep.

    hope people are doing ok

    keep smiling x

  • evening

still hot and sticky today despite a torrential down pour last night, not too much thunder and lightning but a lot of rain. not too much today and muggy. however, surprised how the plants just shoot up over night when the weather is good for them,! the sweetcorn seem to have doubled over night !!

the mini mafia got drenched in the down pour they thought it was really funny one minute sitting on the deck chairs waiting to see the thunder and lightning because rumour had it that it was a dry thunder storm!!! hahaha should not have listened to the runours - not true!!! they got soaked and wet fur smells! so all of them had to queue up for the bath to have a shower or a bath to get warm and clean before going to bed . by the time it was the last person to get ready it was already dawn so a sleep in was allowed.

think the weather got all the midges out and they must have flwon to my window as i woke up biten !! those little tiny tiny bites they give that are itchy and unfortunatley also near fuego.

well how are everyone ??? whats happening?????

    keep smiling x

  • afternoon

what a difference. day makes! rain has now cooled the air considderably and we are still getting some heavy down pours. I dont mind as i am struggling a bit this morning.

pedro is keeping me company and the hubby is looking forward to the footie later - of course an importnt match for him England playing against Scotland!! his anticiption and nerves are getting  to him a bit lol. i laugh at the intensity of some peoples passion for footie lol.

glad the weather is cooler and wet cannot be tempted to do any gardening today so can try and relax. have done 5 minutes sanding and that has made my breathing heavy so have stopped, may do a bit more ancestry as that is easy and think about the hogs work i still have to do. keep wanting to pick up paints but no energy - frustrated.

the mini mafia have got their deflatable sswimming pool up so it can fill up with the rain water and they have already got their swimming cossies out ready. the little uns have been looking out the doors every five minutes to see if the pool is ready so the mums are shouting at them to close the doors and keep the cold air out. distracting little uns that are persistant is difficult!! by the looks of the weather it does not look like it should take too long.

    hope everyone is doing ok.

take care and keep smiling x

  • morning

quite chilly this morning which is surprising. Pedro upset i threw his ball next door my dirrection is not that brilliant!!! will have to wait until later when they are up. i hear you laugh yes i throw and the ball moves with the arm as it comes bak so it goes sidde ways lol. then imagine poor pedros face when he goes to the spot and cannot see the ball looks confused as it has gone over the fence lol.

hubby not too impressed with the footie last night but then he said he quite expected it. he still thinks we will go through but then there is always blind faith lol.

having a zoom talk with friends this afternoon - zoom seems to be the way but its not the same as seeing people and sharing a meal with them is it so cant wait for that to happen. At this rate it will be Christmas lol.

well nothing really happeneing today looking forward to seeeing what flowers are out next.

    hoping everyone is ok

    keep smiling xx
