Tonsil Cancer - Whirlwind Week

Hi All

Firstly Hats Off to the NHS in Wales, they have been super amazing since my diagnosis on New Years Eve. Thank you all

The title of the post is Whirlwind Week and this is why:

New Years Eve I have a phone call from ENT confirming tonsil cancer.  Very apologetic confirmed over the phone.  Wants me in for a biopsy.   Later the same day I get calls from ward team and covid test centre booking appointments.

Monday 4th January i have a covid test at 9.30am. Results back same day, negative for Covid19.  On route to test centre call from pre assessment team asking me to go in straight after my covid test for my biopsy pre assessment.   Forgot to mention biopsy booked for 7th January.

Tuesday 5th January have an ultrasound at 9.30am and an MRI ar 11.00am.  The ultrasound was an external ultrasound of my neck. They decided to take two needle biopsies of lymph nodes which took some doing as the nodes were so solid they couldn't get needle in... Thank goodness for local anesthetic :)

From ultrasound they decided to send me for a 3d scan of my jaw.  This was done primarily in case I need any teeth removed pre radiotherapy treatment.  Apparently radiotherapy can cause your back teeth to crumble.  Don't panic not everyone has this done.  i believe it totally depends on size, position of tumour and the amount of radiotherapy you need.

After the jaw scan I went straight for my MRI.  Think I  had two 10 minute sessions,  the second 10 with dye injected into my blood.  I had also had this done for a CT scan on 18th December.

Wednesday 6th January day off.  Which I used to eat as many nice things as possible :)

Thursday 7th January 07.30am its minus 4 degrees c and I'm back at the hospital with my overnight bag ready for another biopsy, I was told to expect to be in hospital overnight.  Due to covid we have to wait at the entrance.  Just 3 of us, asked lots of covid related questions and temperature checked before being escorted to the clean ward.

The ENT surgeon comes to see me to explain the procedure.  Remember everyone is different.   So for me they are going to remove the good tonsil and send it for tests.  What? Not the bad tonsil?  The reason for this is because when you have cancer in one tonsil it is pretty much a done deal that you will get itin the other.   Also by leaving the cancerous tonsil in it allows for more treatment options.  If they cut it out there will only be one treatment path.

During the tonsillectomy they also took biopsies of my bad tonsil and my tongue.   After the op ENT told me that it would take about 7 days for the results so they expect to be calling my Wife and I in a week on Wednesday.

I was allowed to go home as long as I had eaten something, drunk something and had a pee.  I was home by 7pm the same day.

Sunday 10th January its 6am and I am sat in bed writing this post.  Next to me is a glass of water which I sip all night, my 6am pills and a lip balm.  My bottom lip took a battering during surgery and is very swollen and sore.   The cancerous side of my throat and shoulder is still painful and the right side is even more painful from the tonsillectomy.  Even my lymph nodes seem to be complaining  :)

But you know what, I don't feel sorry for myself,  I don't feel sad.  I'm going to lose weight, but hey I'm 5ft 6inch and 13 and a half stone (male) i could do with shedding a few pounds ;)

I know this is just the start of a long hard journey,  but I'm ready... bring it on I say!

  • morning

well i hope eveeeryone is still enjoying the weather and lapping it all up. very quiet here just my ramblings!!

planted my celeriac yesterday because they were not doing anything really in the tray so they have a 50/50 chance now. did a bit of weeding around the hen house to tidy up whilst they insisted on trying to kick things out at me!!

will need to water the plants again later the weather has slowed things down it is strange things are not growing as well as they should. the veggies usually sprout up by now and are not will have to keep an eye on everything. my pond plants should be arriving any day so thats exciting.

may also do a little sanding too if i have the energy. that should be my job of day but these jobas have gone out the window a bit so need to get a grip and start again.

find something nice to do today and keep smiling xx

  • peaceful moment Pedro has gone to the beach with his brother fingers crossed he behaves!!! they have been out over half an hour so we are hoping.

planted my pond floating plants hopefully they will look good when they recover from the journey. the garden is coming together.

hubby got his football mag match of the day and we had hysterics because it has coloiuring in drawings and stickers, top trump cards lol we laughed as it ;ooked like it was for the under eights not adults!!!!

have a fun evening - hes cutting out the marcus rashford face mask now too ! x

  • afternoon

well a cooler day todayand we have had some rain that the plants are enjoying. its amazing seeing the plants suddenly sprout up when they arre happy and this rain has been a welcome relief for them. the little plugs i planted out the front have started to perk up and the pond plants are shooting they liked being in the water.

went out qnd got some new lights for the living room and got our neighobour to put them up for me this afternoon. theyare led orb globe lights look like a galazy of planets am really plesed - from the range so not too expensive either. still a long way to go before the living room is any where finished but it is gtting closer all the time.

pedro had his surprise gallophant on the coast last night and got home quite tired. he had been reasonbly good albeit a bit vocal!!! and had really enjoyued himself. am lucky to have some good friends who can on occasion do things like this for me.l

birds were all chatty agsan today early before the rain came and the starlings are still hanging around a bit like children who know they are better of at home not having to fend for themsleves and definately stay as long as possible. there is a brother and sister in the group becasue they bicker more than the others as is the case with brothers and sisters. i will need to refresh the fat square again tomorrow.

busy day tomorrow have a hedgehog charity trustees meeting in the morning so i have to make sure i get some decent sleep tonight to be able to take the minutes. then we have a friends zoom in the afternoon /evening they are still being cautious until she has been fully vaccinated and they feel more comfortable with the situation. is always good to catch up.

hope everyone is doing ok and getting better. any follow ups yet?

    take care keep smiling x

  • morning

well weather has changed wow quite chilly this morning, however, did not stop the jackdaws coming down onto the birdtable for breakfast. it wa actually a lovely sight to see they are very handsome. interestingly they bicker but not anywhere as much as the starlings do. the birdtable looked quite small with them squeezing themselves on it lol.

the mini mafia have had to hire builders to renovate the hotel structure and so far it has grinded to a halt. the builders like their tea too much and seem to sit on their butts more than they build!! there is a little wolf whistling going on when a young sweet girl goes past and particuarly one called Annie she plays on it walking very demurely past slowly so they can take her pretty figure in then she likes to pull faces at them before she runs away giggling. her mother is in despair at her attitiude but then girls will be girls and like to flirt !

getting ready for my busy morning sorting out the hedgehogs having to have several cups of tea to try and wake myself up properly!! (my cups are those large cups that are probably two cups in one). the cats and pedro also dont understand that it is not nap time so i have had to give a chew to pedro and move the cats or i will not be able to move and take minutes lol.

gutted my yakon roots died. they did not arrive in the best condition and unfortunately did not like the weather we have had so they died. will try again sometime because they are interesting. the other veggies are doing alright now we had some decent rain yesterday and not too warm. it is amazing how a small change can have a huge change in growth. thats the joy of gardening - how is everyone elses garden?

well time to get myself ready take care have a good weekend.

    remember to keep smiling x

  • Hi, I'm still following your very enjoyable posts.  As for the garden, we'll, in his infinite wisdom my husband planted loads of seeds etc before his treatment started and I have been left to try and keep an eye on them although he is now beginning to get back out there slowly.  I'll try to remember everything we have growing - potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, pumpkins, melons, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, strawberries, blueberries, sweet potatoes, chillies, plus flowers for pots and baskets!  The good thing is they're all surviving, phew

Hubby is now on day 18 since finishing treatment and he certainly looks better, his neck has almost completely healed, still has the mucus problem but he's definitely coughing/choking less so I think it's improving slowly, it would be nice to hear how Sam is doing as he's only a couple of weeks in front.
Keep up the minimafia bulletins I love them although I have to confess in the beginning I thought they were an actual family it's only when you mentioned about the mass christening and them putting all the babies in a field that I had to look further back in the posts to see what on earth was going on!!!
hope your weather picks up again soon

  • Morning to a beautiful morning.

Hi Judy what a lovely surprise to hear from you. Am so glad your husband is doing ok thats fantastic hope it continues with strength by strength. Wow what a lot of seedds gosh that is immense you must have a huge garden!! iam so impressed. you must both have green fingers. Glad you like my ramblings lol. Hope you are also ok in yourself and having some you time.

The garden flowers are coming out. the coco cola geraniums are a lovely mauve, the plugs are increasing in size and strength too. Wild daisies surround my tall beech, foxgloves arre sprouting all over the place where i have left them to grow. My hawthorn tree is full of crimson blossom and leaves are emerging on the grape and walnut. It is a glorious time in the garden and one that gives me pleasure and makes me smile.

there was a little calamity in the restoration one of the builders had not attached a scaffold correctly and it fell down causing a small cave in. no one was hurt nd there was not a lot of destruction but the manager was not amused and fired the builder on the spot. There followed a punch up involving the builder and the manager and like all mini mafia other builders decided to join in for the fun of it resulting in a few black eyes so they looked more like pandas than mafia!!! the wifes hearing all the commotion were telephoned and came running down to drag their hubbies aaway by their ears!!! wives tongues are not something you want to hear!!! consequently the building has ground to a halt again for a short time until a new crew has been hired.

we went and got some new curtains from the range yesterday for the living room glitz!! lol we had some new orb lights in chrome so the silver thread that goes throught the curtains should hopefully show these up more but there is so much to do sometimes it is over whelming when i cannot do that much a day and the thought i need to go back to work sometime also is a bit of a worry.

anyway onwards and up wards !! enjoy the day and stay strong and keep smiling xx

  • Morning wow what a warm day it is! hope you are all soaking up the rays.

The buider mini mafia have all had to stop too being too hot even under ground! they are all lying around in their deck chairs exposing the typical builders bums and tums drinking a whole load of lager. The environmental police are having to go round and collect all the tinnies that are just being thrown all over the place once they are drunk. the radio is blazing and on occasions there is some very our of tone singing when something comes on that brings out the jolly ness. the mums have all gone down to the beach again for the rich pickings although most people are at work or school there are still quite a few people around. (the occasional screams when they are spotted!). they even took their rubber rings and bathing suits to have a dip of their toes.

garden is definately coming up nice and colourful - yellows, oranges, blues, reds, purple, white, am really pleased. hoping it gets beter and better. the few veggies i have are doing ok, celeriac seem to take ages to grow but the sweetcorn has trebled in size and the butternut squash are doing ok. all will need watering later.

too hot for me so gentle cleaning of bedroom and watching judge judy lol. entertainment!!

have good day keep improving and smiling x

  • hi

well its official we are in a mini heat wave. Woke up at 4am for meds then Rasputin decided he aws going to make a run for it!!! what a scare he has not been out for 5 years! so panic mode sneeked in as the animals are really important to me and at 5am iam having a cupp of tea and doing some weeding trying to hope he came back. Iam then distracting myself with another look at my family bhistory - havent touched it in years as it is expensive hobby ordering certificates etc but my sister in law put up something about my grandad that i wasnt sure about sounded too good to be true! apparently being one of the first to land on D day and helpe liberate Belsen. He came from Pontypool until he married then moved to Kent and Sussex, met his wife in the army she wa a cook but apart from that i didnt think he had been any more extradordinary than any other private and the Americans do like to belish things!!! so i decided to pick uip the family history again and see if i could find anything out. i now have to wait for his wedding cert in 1943 (should tell me his profession) and death cert.

thsnkfully Raspie has now come running in after i trespassed on the neighbours field calling him and has had a special breakfast.! we can now relax...

mini mafia builders have now stripped down to their pants -yuck!!! showing all their handsome builders physiques lol, that includes beer bellies!!! it is too hopt for them to work so they have carried on drinking and claiming expenses. no one seems to know when things will start again. The families had fun at the beach yesterday they arre aiming for the parks today where there will be a little more shade to enjoy the pickings and the babies cannot cope in this heat so they have to have all the sun umbrellas up and cold packs in the prams.

there was a pond up on the road still yesterday because it was in the shade and the blackbird was having a whale of a time dunking itself and flapping its wings bathing it was quite lovely to see, even let me and pedro get reasonably close before it decided to move. what fun.

hope everyone is ok and enjoying the sun keep smiling x

  • another beautiful day guys

hope everyone is getting on ok x

really warm at the moment so went outside at 5am to do five minute weeding lol - well had to get up for meds so thought why not it was lovely and cool. all quiet on the western front as they say!! pedro loved it also he had a play then came back in with us and settled until lunchtime.

the cats are all settled on my bed with me and to cool us down we are watchng an icequake disaster movie lol. - not sure it is happening but enjoying it none the less. Raspie is ok after yesterdays escapade, he even decided to have a go at shugs this morning when she walked past him he swiped her so i think she was responsible for his adventure.

A definate no job really day today far to hot and too tired but little by little sorting out my bedroom.

sweetcorn are now sprouting nicely and butternut squash slowly and surely. the celeriac are not so sure about they dont really seem to be doing anything at all. the fruit are doing well, will have blueberries, blackcurrants, plums, pears, apples, saskatoons and strawberries.

mini mafi are remaining quiet today they are still having siestas each afternoon and all day to be honest whilst this weather lasts. the hotelier is not happy because each day they lay on their bums he is loosing money but as far as the humans are concerned they are happy. cousin has been back to his pond home and there was a little opening occuring so this is in need of repair. (hoping it is not due to the cousin and just the weather). Today seems warmer so the mums have taken the children to the woods - the problem is the woods are a bit scary for the children because of the shade casting shadows around and there are more animals there with less pickings but there is a small wood just down the road and apart from some deer and a few dogs walking it is not too busy. it is great for playing hide and seek in too - lots of undergrowth and the mums often come back stressed after continuous counting to make sure all are present and correct. kids do like to make sure their mums have many mini heart attacks to keep them on their toes!!! at least the kids dont argue as much playing hide and seek except who goes first! the mums take thri knitting and end up talking usual gossip together for an hour or so before heading home.

really hoping everyone is ok - Al, Alli, Sam.

take care and keep smiling theri is light at the end of the tunnels x

  • Afternoon

sweltering today!! no energy to do anything probably how a lot of people are feeling. Have a webinar tomorrow I need to do some reading for instead are more interested in family history as have found a second cousin living )think thats right grandson of grandads brother. find all thinkgs like this fascinating and very distracting from normal life. so many thing s on the go and keep starting then put down - rubbish!! have some adoptee leaflets to finish for next month so that must be next job,.

at moment have three cats on bed with me one lying flat on his back showing his tummy or rather should say totally exposee!!! what a floosee. Pedro is a little restless because he would love to be outside but cant risk it leaving door open after Raspies little adventure at moment not until he has settled down again and reduced his stress levels. mind you when i do go out with Pedro all he does is lie down lol.

husband is getting excited about the football strting tomorrow - grrrrr = not interested in the least so i will hve all the time in the world to catch up on anything i want to or have energy for - will have to make a plan or nothing will get done!!!! but am looking forward to wimbledon and the olympics.

the mini mafia have decided to hold their own football team and have invited the neighbouring team to play them on saturday so they are in training. better than the builders sitting on their bums still! the team is getting fit doing a lot of star jumps and tackling with squabbles over the rules - seems like noone really knows when someone is off side or not and whether you are allowed to kick someone or not and knock them over. a few hard knocks maybe needed since rumour has it the visitors are a bit rough so expect some black eyes. ..

procastinating long enough of to do a little reading for tomorrow. weare the first behavioursit group to detemine that emotions play huge part in animals behaviour and this has just been updated so i have to get myself up to date and accomplish the webinar tomorrow.

    speak soon keep smiling x
