Tongue Cancer - concerned about speech

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, I've been diagnosed with tongue cancer last week after receiving the biopsy results. I went to the dentist after having an ulcer for 1 month and they decided to take a biopsy.

I'm due to get my MRI and CT scan this week for staging but the doctor thinks its T1 (1.5cm) on the left and base of my tongue.

This blog has been great and comforting during the time of waiting.

I am concerned about my speech post op and would really appreciate to hear your feedback and experiences. How much was it impacted if any, recovery time etc.

Many thanks and happy holidays everyone!

  • Hi

I'm fine thank you had my first follow up appointment with max fax after finishing radiotherapy eight weeks ago. He had a good look and feel and said everything looks ok. Have some kind of contact every six weeks now not sure if it's telephone or not.

Teeth wise don't think can have implants on the side that's had all the radiation but to be honest I would rather have some kind of bridge.

I felt better three weeks after radiotherapy when I started eating more. Its nearly nine weeks now since I finished and have no side effects now.

Neck still a little swollen and flap still irrating but nothing to stop me going back to work soon.

You've just got to bite your tongue and get on with it

  • Hello  [@LDDR]‍

I'm definitely in the same position extremely tough week I'm in extreme pain. Can't sleep excess mucus, very sore tongue that even water is becoming extremely tough. Lost lots of weight and I'm almost dependent on peg tube.

Thanks [@irate]‍  for giving us hope, I'm really hoping things start getting better by the end of this week.

    Good luck all!

  • Hi

I hope things are improving for everybody, I assure you things will get better. Keep positive you will get there..

  • Hi

[@irate][@LDDR]‍ it's almost 4 weeks post treatment and thought I'd give and update. Definitely feeling better in terms of energy/ mucus issue. Started to rely less on peg tube but on liquid diet due to my tongue being extremely sore, swollen and full of ulcers - not sure if there is anything that can be done on that or how more do I need to wait for it to settle. I'm really hungry and craving some food. How are you both doing ?

    Good luck all!

  • Hi SMSM91

I'm ok thank you apart from dry mouth driving me crackers

New teeth being sorted end of July which seems ages away now really fed up with sloppy food. I have been using my rowing machine more and more to exercise my right arm and shoulder which was very weak and stiff, now a lot better.

Neck swelling going down and flap going more squishy but I'm hungry and impatient so asked for it de bulking. Was told it's to early and got to wait and not be impatient.

Had second covid jab yesterday arm quite sore today had a Guinness to cheer myself up.

    You'll feel better soon

  • Hi

i too was diagnosed with tongue cancer. Radiotherapy removed it successfully and without affecting my speech, but unfortunately it spread to my gland. They removed my gland but bad news again, it had attached to my main artery. Obviously that cannot be removed. I am currently undergoing immunotherapy and this appears to be working perfectly. I had an MRI scan recently and it looks like the cancer is shrinking. My nurses are amazed with how I'm doing. It's not been easy but but you've got to believe you can fight it. Be strong

  • Hi

Thanks for your reply and apologies for the delayed response. I wish you the best of luck with immunotherapy - please keep us posted. As you said we need to be strong and this forum has been really helpful.

It's been five weeks since I finished my chemo and radiotherapy- things are getting better except for my sore tongue and ulcers which seem to get worse - pain is unbearable which is affecting my oral intake. Hopefully that will get better soon.

@LDDR and @irate how are you doing ?

    All the best!

  • hi SMSM91

Sounds like your really going through the wringer i hope you've got plenty of help.

I'm ok dry mouth improving slowly i think, neck still slightly swollen but apart from that im ok. Still on the soft diet with no back teeth and the flap, keep trying to exercise more everyday.

    I hope things improve soon..

  • Hi Irate

Good to hear from you and hope things improve quickly. Whats the plan with for your back teeth now ?

How was your experience with sore mouth and ulcers ? its been 5 weeks for me and weirdly getting worse every day which seems to be unheard of. Im still on liquid diet and bearly managing as everything sems to burn my tongue.

I'm getting my energy back but still building confidence in my body, what type of excercises do you do. Im thinking of starting running again but a bit worried.

    All the best!

  • Hi

As far as teeth are concerned I don't want implants.  The restorative dentist has said he would do the surgery after checking my radiotherapy dose. I don't want any more surgery and only one side would be an option anyway.

Ulcers disappeared after a couple of weeks but used tons of gelclare and drank lots water. Jaw and neck still sore now though I have no feeling in half my tongue so not sure about that.

Exercise wise I'm walking and using rowing machine and cutting trees down in garden.

    Chin up

    Irate
