Tongue Cancer - concerned about speech

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, I've been diagnosed with tongue cancer last week after receiving the biopsy results. I went to the dentist after having an ulcer for 1 month and they decided to take a biopsy.

I'm due to get my MRI and CT scan this week for staging but the doctor thinks its T1 (1.5cm) on the left and base of my tongue.

This blog has been great and comforting during the time of waiting.

I am concerned about my speech post op and would really appreciate to hear your feedback and experiences. How much was it impacted if any, recovery time etc.

Many thanks and happy holidays everyone!

  • Hi there, sorry you're having a crap time [@SMSM91]‍ are you rinsing your mouth with salt water? That seemed to help Scott with the mouth sores. Do you have liquid morphine to help with the pain?

He still has pain in his mouth and now getting these tiny water blisters. He's got a treatment review tomorrow so they'll have a good look in his mouth.

Re exercise; he's been walking but mostly resting to let his body heal although he did talk about going for a run the other day!

You will start to improve so hang in there.

[@irate]‍ teeth will be our next thing with Scott as pretty sure they'll want to remove a couple, the dental team originally said they wanted to remove 6-7 teeth but couldn't do it before RT as he was having his mask fitted the next day. Anyway, we'll deal with that when it comes.

    What are your teeth options?

  • Hi LDDR

I have had five teeth out and my cheek has slightly sunk on the left hand side.

Options are implants ( dependant on radiotherapy dose ) or a bridge however until the flap has settled down one side of mouth only.

I have no issues opening my mouth which can be an issue after radiotherapy.

Will now be seeing my dentist every three months for cleaning and polishing etc..

    [@SMSM91]‍  hope you ok

  • Hi [@irate]‍  [@LDDR]‍  and everyone,

It's been a while and into week 9 post treatment - I finally feel great and been feeling well for the last week or 10 days. I'm eating well with water in hand, the way I eat is still weird but good enough for now. Pain is almost gone except for some tooth pain which started yesterday - will visit the dentist next monday. Had my first MRI today hopefully it's good news. Anyway pain is limited, energy is back, eating well so life is good

    How are things with you..

Wishing everyone the best of luck!

  • Hi [@SMSM91]‍

That's great news your feeling better

I've had a lot of neck issues these last two weeks a bit of a bumpy ride.

    Take care

  • Hi [@irate][@SMSM91]‍

It's been so long thought I'd check in with you both, how are you doing now?

Scott is doing well, has a bit of pain now and again but he's having regular check ups.

He can eat most things but still struggles with some foods, spaghetti is too much like hard work but luckily his taste has mostly come back.

Hope all good with you both.

  • Hi [@LDDR]‍

Indeed it's been a while and I'm glad Scott is doing well.

Im doing great - thanks for asking. I've been back to work two months now. No pain, taste is back and can eat most things just dry mouth makes it difficult with sandwiches. All in all things are good and can't complain.

    All the best!
