Tongue Cancer - concerned about speech

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, I've been diagnosed with tongue cancer last week after receiving the biopsy results. I went to the dentist after having an ulcer for 1 month and they decided to take a biopsy.

I'm due to get my MRI and CT scan this week for staging but the doctor thinks its T1 (1.5cm) on the left and base of my tongue.

This blog has been great and comforting during the time of waiting.

I am concerned about my speech post op and would really appreciate to hear your feedback and experiences. How much was it impacted if any, recovery time etc.

Many thanks and happy holidays everyone!

  • Hi SMS

I did not know you were having chemo as well I presume this was from the pathology report.

How many nodes you have removed ?

Keep positive it will be over before you know it !

  • Hello - yes it's from the pathology report. They removed 15 (levels I to IV) one of which had cancerous cells in level IV.

staying positive and it will pass.

    all the best!

  • I had three positive nodes amongst 45 identified however there was no evidence of ECS so didn't need the chemo my tumour was 20ml by 10ml so a little larger than yours.

Eat as much as you can

  • Hi there, good to hear your updates.

We are relaxing until my partners RT treatment starts next Monday 22nd.

He had 22 nodes taken out in the end but found 2 were affected, so they're doing radiotherapy on both sides of the neck and the tongue where the tumour was. He has avoided having any teeth out as there wasn't time but have said they will reassess in 5 months time so we'll have to see.

Good luck with your treatment [@SMSM91]‍ really hope it all goes well

  • Hi

Same radiotherapy as I had both sides of the neck and one side of the mouth. I had seven teeth removed during my operation, gums are still sore now. Main issues for me with radiotherapy have been mouth ulcers and now it's finished burns on my neck.

    Hope your partner flies it

  • Thanks

Did you lose taste buds at all and was it painful to eat? Im sure we'll have to get the Fortisip drinks back in the house at some point!

  • I've gone off sweet things which makes things difficult as that's where the calories are. I've gone back to drinking the fresubin 2kcal three a day at the moment. It has not been painful to eat it's the mouth ulcers which hurt and now my neck is very  red and sore.  I've lost around 3lb during the whole process mainly cause I haven't had an appetite.

    Getting back to normal already..

  • Oh no! Hopefully that's just temporary.. sounds like you did pretty well all in all :-)

Yes, our oncologist said the ulcers can get pretty nasty, hope your neck gets better soon

  • Hi [@irate]‍

Just thought I'd check how are things post treatment - hope everything is good and your neck is getting better.

I have just finished week one which was so far good with the exception of the chemo night which came with a lot of nausea despite all the meds.

Doing well now and 5 more weeks to go!

[@LDDR]‍  - how are things going with your partner ?

    Take care everyone!

  • Hi

I'm ok thank you neck is fine now doing the massage techniques to get rid of the last of the swelling which is apparently lymphademia. Starting the other exercise to get my arm and shoulder back to full strength. Getting a bit bored at home thinking of going back to work on a phased return we'll see how next couple of weeks go.

You'll smash this you'll be half way before you know it !
