Tongue Cancer - concerned about speech

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, I've been diagnosed with tongue cancer last week after receiving the biopsy results. I went to the dentist after having an ulcer for 1 month and they decided to take a biopsy.

I'm due to get my MRI and CT scan this week for staging but the doctor thinks its T1 (1.5cm) on the left and base of my tongue.

This blog has been great and comforting during the time of waiting.

I am concerned about my speech post op and would really appreciate to hear your feedback and experiences. How much was it impacted if any, recovery time etc.

Many thanks and happy holidays everyone!

  • Hi LDDR And everyone.

I have been doing a catch up since Ive not been on in a wee while. Hope you are all doing ok.

Did op go well? Such a shame he has had to have more tongue surgery,it will have dented his confidence. Its unfortunate but does happen when they get the full path report.

I know when I was able to look in my mouth after op, I was pre-warned they had to go further but I was still a bit shocked when I seen how far. I dont know if I have a right tonsil any longer as I cant see it as thats how far back the palate they went.

The numbness in my neck has improved a bit but my face is numb on right side surgeon said it would either recover in a year or may be permanent so I guess Ive got what Ive got. One strange thing I found is that I hate rain on my face it feels like a thousand wee needles and theres no chance of avoiding rain :-)  Also my tongue hangs over to the left so I often bite it when chewing painfull !!

Keep well and stay in touch. xx

  • Hi All,

    Hope everyone is doing great!

[@irate]‍  one more week over and just a short period remaing - How are you feeling?

[@LDDR]‍ How was the operation and How is your partner doing?

  • Hi

Two more week and one day remaining to be exact..

I'm feeling fine the gel has made the mouth ulcers painless except for one right in the scissor which hurts like hell.

Apart from that no issues, touch wood, apart from being bored with current diet. Flap getting smaller and harder everyday just need some teeth !

Got appointment at Lymphoedema clinic next month for massage training.

Right shoulder still a bit stiff and weak I'll have to start working on that soon..

    All in all can't moan..

    Cheers, chin up

  • Hello [@SMSM91]‍  & [@clara56]‍  I hope you are both well and doing ok.

Update from me; he came out of hospital on Saturday afternoon and has been recovering well at home. The neck dissection scar is smaller than we thought and looks nice and neat with 10 staples. He said the most painful thing was having the drains pulled out! Eek. His tongue is healing well too, it's a very impressive shape now!

We go back to the hospital on Friday to get the pathology results and to get his staples taken out. Fingers crossed all will come back ok and no further treatment will be needed.

Will let you know, thanks for staying in touch :-)

  • Hi all, how is everyone doing?

Update from us, we went back to get the results today post neck dissection and unfortunately the nodes they took out were cancerous so he'll now be having six weeks of radiotherapy. Not ideal and not what we were expecting really but we've come this far so we just need to get on with the next treatment now. Trying to think positively! My partner is struggling with this news as he was just beginning to feel ok so feels like we're going backwards. So hard and upsetting. Our CNS has been great and will refer him to have some talking therapy so hopefully that will help.

Let me know how you're all getting on? Weather is getting better so that's something!

    Happy weekends all x

  • Hi [@irate]‍ - One

e more week down and hope all is going well.

Hi [@LDDR]‍ - good to hear you're doing well and only better to come. Continue with the physio excersices and things do get better on a daily basis.

Im doing my appointments and getting ready to start my treatment withing the next 2 weeks. Hopefully it will pass by quickly.

    Take care everyone!

  • Hi

Last full week of radiotherapy starts tomorrow and last scan tomorrow which I don't like as your strapped down for longer.

Skin on neck and chops starting to get dry and flakey but the barrier cream I was given seems to be moisturising it nicely.

Mouth ulcers more or less gone the gel has done wonders especially on my dry mouth.

Stopped using mouthwash instead using good old fashioned salt water. Keeping my mouth much cleaner especially my tongue.

    Cheerio

  • Hello [@irate]‍ / [@LDDR]‍

It's been along time now and I thought I'd see how everyone is doing?

[@irate]‍  I believe you're done with treatment now / how are you feeling?
