Father diagnosed with Mesothelioma

Hi all!

This is my first time posting on this forum, and I'm not really sure on how really to talk about this kind of thing yet, so I'm just going to be blunt! My dad was diagnosed with Mesothelioma about a month ago now, after going into hospital about pain in his chest and trouble breathing and suspecting a chest infection of some kind. The doctors thought the same thing, and started him on antibiotics. After an X-ray, the Doctors noticed some 'nodules' and fluid in his lung. After a keyhole surgery and a biopsy, he was diagnosed with Mesothelioma that was considered to be quite non-agressive. A treatment plan was started, and he had fluids and a blood transfusion, along with another chest X-ray, and we were all quite hopeful about the treatment, as we were told that it wasn't too agressive. But not three weeks later, my Dad wasn't improving, and after going into the hospital for a check up, we were told the the cancer had got so advanced that treatment wasn't an option anymore, and that my Dad was very much on the downwards slope, and has been sent home so that he can be comfortable in the last few days if his life.

This all very sudden, and I'm sure I'm just being paranoid but it doesn't seem to add up? Even after the Meso diagnosis, the Doctors kept him on antibiotics, as if there was still a chance that it was an infection?

Also, my father is really struggling with a change in his taste, and can't eat almost any foods as he feels like the taste is different, and it feels like 'glue in his mouth', and I was wondering if any other Cancer patients had experienced this, and had any advice or solutions?

I suppose I'm just looking for some reassurance, things are a little difficult at the moment!

Thankyou!

  • Hello Fawnie,

I am sorry to hear about your dad's mesothelioma diagnosis and that he was told that treatment wasn't an option anymore. I can imagine this has been a bit of a shock for you. We have information on our website on living with advanced mesothelioma which you can find here and which I hope will be useful to you. It must be hard to watch your dad deteriorating so quickly and to see him struggling with changes in his taste. How awful for him that food tastes like glue in his mouth. I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have had to deal with this issue before and that they will come and share their experiences with you as well as tips and suggestions as to how they dealt with it before. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you have any questions for them.

Things must be so hard for you at the moment - I just wanted you to know that we are here for you anytime you need to talk to others who understand what you and your dad are currently going through.

    Best wishes,
