Rectal Cancer

Hie Everyone

I have recently been diagnosed with Rectal cancer after under going through 3 procedures  included biopsies which where superficial and inconclusive for the past 4 months, CT Scans and MRI scans also failed to detect any cancer until I had a sigmoidscopy done and i was informed i had a tumour growing in me, I am 46 yrs old with no known medical conditions and to my suprise i was informed that  this diagnosis was caught at the early stages however the doctors have advised removal of the rectum and having a stoma bag permanently  as the best corrective treatment and solution. This decision has taken me by suprise and confused as it sounds so excessive, I would like to hear from anyone who can offer some advise or  share any similar experience,  I would really appreciate any help i can get.

Thank you in advance for your time

  • Hi,

I just wanted to check up to see how you're doing. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in January 4-5cm tumour which I'm waiting to be removed x

  • Hi

Thank you so much for checking up on me, I am doing ok, healing takes time and needs a practical approach, I am really sorry about your diagnosis, where exactly is your tumour located?,  Please feel free to chat, what I realised is the more you discuss this condition with people who have undergone similar experiences the more comfortable the journey becomes

Wishing you well in your journey

  • Hi,

Its good to read that you're doing ok, we're similar age. I was told under 50 is very young and could be genetic so I will be tested for that too.  My tumour is in the lower rectum. I'm going straight for open surgery no radiotherapy first. They will test the lymph nodes after surgery to see whether I need chemo or not, it's just the waiting around for surgery that's stressful.

  • Hi

were you given the choice about going straight for surgery? My husband was told he needed a stoma ( probably permanent) which has been done. Next he's having radiotherapy then four rounds of chemotherapy. Surgery was not mentioned as an option until after these other courses of treatment are completed

    thanks

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear about your husband. No I wasn't told of any other options whatsoever. I was told the best course of action was straight to surgery temporary loop Ileostomy and only chemotherapy if required. A friend of mine who I've met through forums had radiotherapy and chemotherapy and no surgery was needed because the treatments alone has cured her. I wish Id had have had  'options'.. best of luck to your husband x

  • Hi Britnell,

It sounds like your husband is receiving the same treatment plan as myself. I have had the stoma and completed the radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment. Recently been scanned and awaiting the results very soon. How is he? Has he completed the radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment yet?

    Richard

  • Hi Richard

My husband is coping well with the stoma and has completed the radiotherapy with no ill effects.

He's just had his second infusion of chemotherapy drugs and has tablets to take at home. He's fine except for some neuropathy in both arms which we are hoping will pass, and he is quite tired.

Good luck to you and I hope your scan results are good ones

  • Hi Sue,

Yes, I had the same - radiotherapy and 4 cycles of chemotherapy with tablets. I also had similar symtoms. He will be glad when its finished...

    Thanks. Will keep in touch.

    Richard
