BCC Diagnosis

Hey everyone,

I had my dermatologist appointment today after being on the 2 week wait pathway referral. I was diagnosed with a BCC which I was suspecting. I also had cryotherapy on a keratoses on my forehead. I've had the bcc for at least 18 months on my neck.

Does anyone know rough waiting times for removal of a bcc? Maybe from experience or in the same situation.

Thanks :-)

  • With bcc and keratosis, I guess you've been out in the sun too long.

How long you'll have to wait is difficult to say, given these unusual times, plus it may vary from area to area.

The important thing to know about basal cell carcinoma (bcc or "rodent ulcer") is that whilst it is cancer, it almost never an emergency that requires urgent treatment.  It is incredibly rare for it to start to spread, so quite possibly it will be put lower down the list for treatment.

I think the best thing is to phone the consultant's secretary and ask whether they have a date in mind for your operation.  If it's too long, you could contact your GP to see if you could be referred to a hospital with a shorter wait.  I don't know if any hospitals do this privately - it may be an option if you have the money.

  • Thanks for responding. I've not been silly in the sun for years but when I was younger I was stupid paying for it now

I'll wait a few weeks and see if I hear anything, if not I'll chase them up like you say. :-)

  • Hi,

Waiting times for BCC removal, in normal times, is about 8 weeks. Depending on Covid constraints at your local hospital will depend if the waiting time is longer.  I suggest giving it 6 weeks and if you haven't had an appointment letter by then, contact the consultants secretary as already suggested. You can always tell them you are available for a last minute cancellation appointment if one comes up (if you can drop everything at short notice).

Good luck and I hope you aren't waiting too long.
