Small cell cancer

Hello,

My mother has recently been diagnosed with Small Cell Cancer they believe started in the lungs however has spread to many other parts of the body including the spine. My entire family is so positive about this diagnosis however I find myself googling all the time and am finding it hard to find any positives.

I think I'm finding it difficult because the results of tests have varied so much day to day it's hard to understand or believe anything that's being said, and I always here the news passed on and never from the horse's mouth.

From what I have found online (I know this is a bad thing to do but I just want to know) once the cancer has spread the survival rates are low, she has had radiotherapy and is starting chemo now, what are others' experiences with this diagnosis, I just want to know what to expect, it's hard to put on a brave face every day, especially when I'm around family, it feels like I know something they don't, when what I've read may not be significant at all.

Thank you for everyone's advice.

  • Hello I am sorry about your mums diagnosis.Googling is a very bad idea infirmations are really old  and useless.I have breast cancer stage 4 mets in my lungs.I was diagnosed in May 2019 and chemo still shrinking the nodules.I am only 43 and feeling pretty well.1x a week i have chemo and 2xweek i back in the office and working. It depends on the person how can cope with the chemo.I dont know how old is your mum but she has to live healthy if its possible to go for a walk everyday and think positively. Also I am eating everyday a bowl of assorted fruit to boost my immunity. Also she has to drink 2 l of water everyday.

If anymore questions feel free to chat.

  • Thank you.

I know googling is a bad idea, but I just struggle because I feel like we're getting so little info from the hospital, and I live and work in another town so never get to speak to the doctors.

It's good to know you're still going strong, she's in her early 60's, smoked all her life and never been in the best of health which is what worries me most, she's upbeat and feeling okay right now which is obviously wonderful. Shes having chemo once every 3 weeks at the moment. She cannot walk at the moment but hopefully once she can we can get her out for a walk and keeping fit and as healthy as can be. In hospital she has gained a slipped disc and broken humerus so the rehabilitation for those is impacting on her ability to get up and keep fit.

  • Oh I am so sorry regarding her mobility issues.Chemo is true it makes you tired but even me i feel tired sometimes i go and just walk around the house.Doesnt matter if its only for 5 min.Now she needs to eat and be healthy like never before.

I hope chemo will help her too.
