Incurable or teminal

Can anyone define the difference between these two prognosis please ? I've been diagnosed with incurable cancer and would like to know exactly what it means. Is it terminal but can be treated with chemotherapy to prolong life and make life more bearable?

Thanks

Chris

  • Hi Chris.

It can be an awkward question to answer, remember I'm a cancer surviver not medicaly trained.

Terminal should be when the patient hasn't got much time left with or without treatment.

Uncurable is where treatment can stop or even shrink the cancer but can't completely get rid of it.

I was told i was uncurable in Feb 2016 been living with my uninvited guest since, saw a new oncologist bit ago and it's now classed as palliative care, nothing changed just different opinions.

    Hope that helps.

  • Hi Billy,

What does it mean by palliative care? What recently changed for you to be classed as palliative?

    Thanks so much

  • Hi jade.

As far as I know nothing changed with me, it's just a different specialists opinion of the medical wording, that's why sometimes things can get very confusing, my old oncologist retired and it was always uncurable. Straight away with new oncologist it's palliative.

I'm still having same treatment nothing changed there.

    Hope that helps you. X

  • Hi Billy,

    Thank you for your reply!

How often are you having treatment?

  • Hi Jade.

I've been on injections since things sorted with diagnosis every three months. Did have chemo at beginning 6 sessions, just lately started having 4tablets a day because cancer count shot up these SHOULD bring it down again, its just wait and see, again.

Hope things are going well with your parent.

Hope you're looking after yourself properly.

  • Hi Chris, Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I'm not a medic, but it looks to me, reading your other posts, that the specialists have had trouble deciding what sort of cancer it is. I agree with Billy: Terminal implies a short life expectancy. Incurable means that it cannot be cured, but may be able to be controlled, possibly for a long time. Your doctor will be able to answer any questions you have. But you will have to ask because some patients do not want to know what their prognosis is, while others do. Wishing you the very best. Harry

  • Hi Chris what I do understand terminal is when you have not long time left.I was diagnosed with incurable breast cancer in May 2019!!!!!Still on treatment and doing well if I dont go for weekly chemo I dont even know I have cancer.I am even back to work.My chemo still working and keep shrinking the lung nodules.I never wanted to know my prognosis because doctors can be very wrong.
