My dad has been diagnosed with prostate cancer

So we have just found out my dad has prostate cancer, he has been keeping it to himself for a couple of months due to no being able to talk/handle the news.
After questioning we found out that it is stage 3 prostate cancer, really all I know about it at the moment as it's hard to try get answers from him.

However, the main thing for me is that he has said he doesn't want treatment or that there's no point. He is only 47 years old, healthy and fit man. I just need some advice on what I can do for him, how I can help him or how I could possibly talk him around to getting treatment.

  • Hi Rebecca.

I'm wondering why your father thinks there is no point in having treatment, if it's only on the prostate it can be monitored or hormone therapy to shrink the tumor or remove it.

If it gone other places, could be why he is so worried about it but it's still treatable.

One example is me but there's quite a few people on the forum in different stages and treatments like [@telemando]‍ or [@woodworm]‍ hopefully they will pop on to explain better than i can.

I'm actually stage 4 my cancer has spread from prostate to lymph nodes, spine, ribs, pelvis and a lung i was diagnosed Feb 2016 been on palliative care since living with my uninvited guest was still working till i had to retire to look after my disabled wife she needs 24 /7 care she has Alzheimers and parkinsons plus other problems.

Just because he has cancer it is not a death sentence it can be treated or lived with.

Hope others will join in soon to explain.

    Best wishes.

    Billy

  • Hi Rebaca,

I was diagnosed several years ago with prostate cancer. My psa was quite high at 70 but with just hormone treatment it came down to 3.18 and when I also had radiotherapy as well, it came right down to 0.01. So it is treatable and even now several years on, it is still very low.

I know at the end of the day it is your fathers decision but I would strongly recomend he considers having treatment.

I was told the treatment was quite harsh , but I didnt find it a problem. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them for you.

I wish you both all the best, Brian.
