Mum diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer stage 4

Hi there,

My mum has been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, stage 4 which has mestasized to her liver. Our heads are spinning, that she's gone straight to stage 4 with no previous cancer. They are going straight to chemo in a few weeks, but mum has basically been given two choices, to take part in a clinical study or standard chemo path. We're all so confused as which route to take as we were expecting a clear treatment path rather than options. Does anyone have any experience or advice, even words of reassurance that I can pass on to her. She's 72 and doesn't feel strong enough to manage the more agressive clinics study, but clearly is confused which path to take. Thanks Jo x

  • Hello I am sorry to hear about your mum.I was diagnosed with breast cancer stage 4 mets in my lumgs, kidney a liver. That was in May 2019.I was offered a clinical trial immunotherapy but because it was only 1 stage of trial it was more about testing the safety of the new drug than to help me.So i refused to be guinea pig and from August 2019 i am on weekly chemo and I am having breaks when I request aprox every 3 months 4 weeks off.I had a CT scan this week and my liver and kidney are clear the only.cancer is in my.lungs but even there the.nodules are still shrinking.

She needs to talk to her team about pros and cons to take part in the trial.Some.people helped some got worse.

    Hi Denise,

I am so sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. This must have come as A terrible shock to both of you, but she is luckky to have you there to support her. I hope that you can both take some hope from Joclaire's story. For all that this is not a diagnosis that anyone wants, good outcomes still exist, so please try and hang on to some positivity.

There is always someone here for you both. Please keep us updated on your mum's journey.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you so much for your kind words, they are really appreciated. It is all a massive shock and we're still in a day at a time mode.

    Hi Joclaire,

I am glad to hear that your mum had decided on her treatment path. This should make you both feel better in yourselves. You will probably find that it is easier to get through this by treating life day by day. Don't look at the bigger picture, as it is too much for anyone to cope with. It is likely to be a difficult path for your mum going through chemo, but keep in touch with her care team if you are concerned about anything.

When are you due to see the consultant again? I do hope that treatment starts soon and that your mum can cope with it.

I am always here if I can do anything to help.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Yes it's definitely helped her feel a bit more in control now she's made the decision. It is absolutely too much to comprehend at the moment. Hopefully she will hear this week about her chemo start date, the sooner the better really as she is starting to feel unwell she thinks as a result of the cancer.

    Thank you xx

    Hi Joclaire,

Your mum will probably feel a little better in herself once she starts here chemo. Have you been told what to expect your mum to feel like during her chemo? She is likely to feel sick and tired and will need your support even more. She will be prescribed medication for thie nausea, but make sure to tell her care team if what she is given initially doesn't work.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Sorry for the slow reply. Mum started her chemo last Friday and is glad to get started but has been suffering with severe bone pain and has a urine infection which she's on antibiotics for now. Sounds like her nausea is just kicking in too. Her second chemo is tomorrow and it's scary but hopefully it will be doing what it needs to, to give her more time.
Thanks for all your replies, Jo xx

    Hi Joclaire,

I am so sorry to hear about your Mum's bone pain and urine infection. Are they still going to go ahead with her chemo tomorrow, despite the urine infection? If her nausea is not being controlled, please let her care team know before she has her next chemo, as there are a number of other drugs which might prove to be more effective.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Yes she's gone ahead with the chemo today. She's not suffering too badly with nausea yet but it's early days I guess. I'll let her know that there are other options available if the nausea becomes a problem xx

    Hi Joclaire,

I'm glad to hear that your Mum was able to go ahead with chemo this morning and, hope that she has a better time than last week, following this. If she needs different anti-nausea medication, please tell her to let her chemo team know before they start to administer her next chemo.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
