Incidental finding

Hi

I recently had a mammogram, called back and shown a small area 5ml it was white in colour with what I describe white feins coming off it, I was told I needed a biopsy then the radiologist, said he has seen areas like this which he believes is a probable cancer and I needed biopsies on the fein like areas call microcalfications, I asked if he was saying I had breast cancer? He said I do recgonise cancers in my job role, I then had biopsies on the microcalfications, I was then asked to speak to a breast nurse who explained my results will be back in 4 days and she would contact me.... This was 2 days ago, I am asking is this normal practice to say this to me because he recognised a cancer in me or do they say this? I can handle this if I have but awake because I am not clear on what he said though he said that, and I just want honest answers please

  • Hello Joyanne,

l understand fully what the radiologist was saying. There job is to scan ,annalyse the result and if suspect pass it along for a biopsy with the results of both going  to the consultant and his team to discuss the clinical issues and future treatment should the scan result be verified by the biopsy.

Important to recognise the radiologist is part of the clinical team, and bring their experience into that setting. l believe this is now normal and gold practice since it results in a faster pathway to diagnosis and future treatment if required, rather than beating around the bush passing notes back and forth. lt would suggest that you should have confidence in your medical team who have obviously established an efficient system to progress matters as quickly as possible.

l hope this helps and that your results are not as bad as you may fear,

                                                  David

  • Thank you for a quick response I should have added they also put titanium clips in and was told this would be for a surgeon to see areas? When you say trust? Are you saying because he said he believed it was a 5ml cancer and the lump was hard he took biopsy from I should trust this is a cancer? As said if it is I can go forward but this waiting is terrible as I am unsure to think ie OK I have cancer just waiting for confirmation?. Also I was called back from first mammogram within 3 days and now waiting longer for pathology... I so appreciate your response

  • Hello again,

taking into account what l had written previously l think the likelyhood of your having a cancer is more certainty than doubt, and the fact this was mentioned was to prepare you for that outcome. If there was a deal of doubt nothing would have been said at the time.

l hope you will soon get final confirmation and a information with regards to treatment shortly,

                                                                             take care, David
