So frightened i cant eat

Yesterday i had a diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and clip for my breast lump. Before leaving i was to,d it is cancer and will wait 2 weeks for the results.

i havebt really eaten for 5 days and can't face food, i have alreday lost 4 pounds in weight - i know i need to eat, but i can't. Can anyone help me please.
My biggest fear is chemotherapy having already seen a few friends go through this, i really don't want it.

I know ecaxtly how your feeling and my heart goes out to you. I too found a lump and went to the breast clinic on wed just gone.

I had the nearly the same experience as you 3 mamagrams, an ultrasound, 5 biopsies, 3 from my breast and 2 from  under my arm  and a metal coil marker clip inserted into my right breas where the lump is.I dont know about you , but it hurt so much and still does.im taking paracetamol which helps a bit.

I to was told right there and then it was cancer, and im waiting on a call this Tuesday to discuss what needs to be done and what treatments i will need.

I was told we dont want you losing any weight , whuch surprised me as im not excatly thin lizzie lol, im only 5ft3 and weigh between 12srone 12 and 13st 1.Depending on what ive eaten.

I also have my son with cancer diognosed with testicular cancer just before  Christmas  hes 35, im 63.So its hard. I am as shell shocked and as nervous as you, and could  quite  easily  not eat, but ive told myself ive got to look after me, if im going to get through this my body will need the energy from food to sustain it

So please try to eat something my lovely, you will only make things worse for yourself. After five days of not eating your going to struggle to eat  as your stomach will have shrunk , and your  probably feeling sicker than you would if you eat .Your not alone with your feelings , its a rollercoaster ride none  of us in here wish to be on . But be kind to yourself and your body  plesee eat something , just a little and often till you can eat a normal size meal.

Im thinking of you  we all care about others in here  going through things wed eather not, but have no choice really, and all i can say is its ok to not be ok sometimes , and be kind to yourself and your body as it wont functuin well without food, just like a car won't run without petrol.

Try to stay positive , i am trying so hard  too and i know its easier said than done , i really really do .im here if you ever need a chat xx

  • Hi jtaylor.

Have you thought about those health or vitamin drinks. Quite a few people have them in stead of proper meals when there there struggling to eat normal foods.

    Best wishes.

    Billy

  • So sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis. It is scary to be faced with something like this.

Not all breast cancers are treated with chemo. (My mother's breast cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Even so she did not have chemo but chose a raft of other treatments – recommended by consultant – and she's still alive 24 years later.)

Please try and relax until you get all the information you need on your specific cancer (which may be different to that of your friends).

No one can force you to have any treatment.

It is for you to decide how you want to manage things.

Sending you lots of positive vibes and hugsxx

  • Thank you for the replies. I've found almost the only thing I can stomach at the moment is glasses of milk.

I'm just so worried the treatment plan is going to be made for me and I'll be expected to follow what they say or nothing else.

My hope is for the lump to be operated on and then radiotherapy, but I cannot face chemotherapy which is what is causing all my anxiety.

I am thinking of calling my gp tomorrow to see if he can give me any help with the anxiety and eating problems.

    Love to you all.

  • Really pleased you are going to call gp.

I've been in a situation where I turned down recommended treatment

I think you both need to flag up your anxieties to the doctors/nurses and also talk things through with a specialist cancer nurse on one of the cancer helplines.

Not everyone gets offered chemo and there are often alternative treatments.

A specialist nurse (I think you should call one of the helplines) will be able to give you a better steer on those kind of issues and how to approach your appointment.

If you can manage to drink milk, can you eat soup or ice-cream?

  • Thank you. What would be the number for a specialist cancer care nurse on one of the helplines?

I haven't been signposted to anywhere at all and feel very much left to it.

    That sounds helpful.

Yes, I have been drinking quite a bit of milk so at least that's something.

  • This is the cancer research number  – today is a bank holiday but they will be back taking calls tomorrow, I understand –

     0808 800 4040, 9am to 5pm.

Hope I've typed that in right (eyesight not the best). Number is at the bottom of this page if you scroll down where it says speak to a nurse.

There is also the macmillan number – not sure if macmillan nurses are available today –

    0808 808 00 00   7 days a week, 8am-8pm

There is a lot of information on the macmillan website alsoxx

Also help on breast cancer now 0808 800 6000 (again you may wish to doublecheck website first)

There is a lot of information on the websites about treatment/questions you might want to ask so that you might want to look at the websites in advance. Plus other supportxx

  • Hello JTaylor

On here there is an option to friend request and message privately like DM's on FB. If you want to do that, I would be more than happy to talk to you.

I have been through the lot in terms of treatment for my cancer and the beginning of your story sounds very similar to me. I'd be more than happy to try to help you.

  • Finally the gp opened after Bank Holiday. Managed to get a telephone consultation and my gp prescribed me with an anti depress called sertraline, he hopes that in about a week this may help in enabling me to eat a little bit more.

    Has anyone else had similar?

Thank you for all the replies.

  • Hi

Accepted your friend request and yes I've had similar!
