Feeling numb after diagnosis

Following a large tumour being removed from my partners colon on May 1st, he had a diagnosis last Thursday. He was told that the oncologist would call to discuss results next Thursday , however he received a call before that from a cancer care nurse regarding his wound from the op. She then proceeded to tell him that his tumour had been staged as a t4 n2 locally advanced . She could not explain really anything about it just that the oncologist would explain next week and tell him about survival rates and treatment.

we went straight on to the internet and are now seeing that he had only about 10% chance of surviving 5 years. We are in total shock. A diagnosis straight out of the blue and our minds in complete mush. A week seems a long time to wait to speak to the oncologist and the constant surging the net for answers

Thank you

  • Hi,

the consultant said they hadn't removed all the tumour in the resection so he is having another scan after 3 months of chemo. She said very unlikely it will have gone so looks like another op unfortunately . More scary times ahead.
I know what you mean about tidying up. I need to mess a few things up to have something to tidy. Luckily the weather has cheered up , was dire last week so bit harder to stay indoors when it's pouring in July. So I bought myself a calligraphy kit. Something I've always wanted to try. It's quite hard but I've been practising and. Some letters are looking good!! Emphasis on some!!

doing a lot of reading and looking forward to getting a haircut in August now.

  • Hi Lisa,

Scary times indeed! But new haircuts will help.

Calligraphy sounds fab. I have a few calligraphy pens on my extraordinarily neat shelf and a book - I had forgotten about the book until you mentioned calligraphy but can place it exactly now I think of it.

My cupboard tidying went to something of an extreme. I put all my stationery items - pens, brushes, inks etc - in very neat order then folded every single item of clothing, including tights, etc, Marie Kondo style.

Finally, I started going through my files, cutting off paper edges that had been torn to neaten things up etc. Guess it was my way of dealing with a shock!

Have also done lots of reading.

Debating whether or not to start swimming again when the indoor pools re-open. The pool is one of the few places I can walk to and which will hopefully open early still. So many of the shops have restricted hours now - just the hours I'm meant to be indoors.

Will get there. Am back in the world after hiding for a bit.

Really good to hear from you. Thanks for the updates!

Also am so impressed with your calligraphy. Such a lovely skill to have. My writing has never been good. But you have given me the courage to try.

    Thank you, Lisa!

    Love, sunnyx

  • Sunny,

you sound so much like me. I could have won a gold medal for tidying. I'm scaring myself how orderly everything is. !

i have started to venture out a little bit baby steps. I've been to chemists and supermarket and garden centre but flying visits click and collect, and of course the dentists. The swimming pool should be ok. I'm sure they are limiting people and it will all be well organised and what a lift it will give you mentally.
to curb my worry that was crippling me I started the calligraphy and also am cooking one new meal every week. Trying completely different dishes I would never normally have the time or inclination to do.

    am enjoying it.

we are just being really careful because hubby still shielding and even after 1st August will continue to be careful

lets hope the weather holds out. Lovely to see you back and lovely to hear from Billy too.
    lots of hugs

  • Hi Lisa,

Wow! You've done so well, Lisa. Cooking new dishes too. I should get back to some baking. Have been eating simple nutritious food but it's a bit boring. Cooking for one isn't the same  as cooking for others too. Will have to start freezing things. Except there's no spare room in the freezer. I forgot to tidy the freezer drawers! (Did defrost the freezer about two months ago and nothing is older than a month...)

Good to know I'm not the only one who tidies my way out of stress.

Yes, the pool should be safe especially if I swim backstroke or just kick up and down with a float. Am a little bit worried about chlorine strength being higher and causing a reaction. Less worried about the virus. You are being very sensible re shielding. Hubby is lucky.

Am going to curl up with another book now. Lots of hugs to you too.

  • Hi Lisa.

Had to reply when you said your trying new dishes,??? Have you tried goldfish pie yet.??

    Sorry couldn't help it.

Glad hubby isn't feeling unwell on chemo.

Your seemingly alot more positive as well. Keep it up. Xx

    Love Billy xxx

P.s if you want to do more cleaning our house is always here.

  • Hi Billy,

Hope you got the antibiotics sorted for Bren and she is more settled.

Any idea when you get the results of your scan and other tests?

Hoping the hormone treatment is doing some good and that the hot weather on its way won't make your flushes too unbearable. Am really fed up with my night sweats.

I was good and went to GP after a few weeks of pretending nothing wrong. Got rewarded with another fast-track referral so appointment this month. Could be more surgery on the day.

At least I'm back fighting. Wanted to pretend everything was okay just for a little while, though that sounds so silly when they put you on these urgent referrals. Can't believe a little beastie could grow back so fast. Maybe it's something else? There are changes to other lesions - more than when I got referred before - so I'm dreading the appointment. How can all this happen so quick? Wonder if my immune system has got messed up or something. Don't like the night sweats at all.

  • Hi Lisa,

Swim plans might be out the window as I have another fast-track referral with possible surgery before pool re-opens. Also really important I don't catch anything.

I was trying to pretend things were okay for a bit when they weren't. But did contact GP and everything got organised quickly. Have put more detail in my reply to Billy below.

At least if I can't do much because I need more surgery the house is now tidy.

Am feeling quite mixed up over need to go back to an urgent clinic so soon. But then you read what others on the forum are going through and I tell myself I'd better buck up. Am trying to be positive and make the most of the days before I go back to clinic. Definitely in shock. Will post again in a few days (when I'm making more sense perhaps).

Hope hubby's chemo is stil progressing ok, you are managing to make occasional trips out, and enjoy some good books and meals and of course time with hubby.

  • Hi sunny.

Dr put bren on cheap ones again but she looks bit better so hoping.

No idea when i hear from oncologist tempted to phone up and stir things up. After the way I've been messed around lately.

Sunny what with your little beasty and my uninvited guest we should really confuse them. I know mine was a shock it took 2 years to get from 0.03 to 2.2 then 3 months to get to 26.5.

But keeping positive and keep fighting remember nomatter what.

Don't forget we will be on your side no matter what all your second family. OK

Please let us know how things go.

We are praying for you as well.

    Love Billy xxx

  • Hi Billy,

Thanks for your update and support. Really appreciated!

Good that Bren is a bit better. Recurrent infections are such a pain. Poor Bren. And you too - I know far too well the extra confusion infections bring.

If you've got a named oncologist Secretary should be able to chase results. Good luck with all that. My GP has been very good at sorting things for me.

Lots of my family have had cancer and I think it's an unlucky hand genetically. Deep down I knew that as soon as I got my last results. Got a bit of a lecture from the consultant about doing regular skin checks. Lucky I listened.

Really appreciate knowing how hard you and others are fighting.

Caring isn't easy and doing that on top of managing one's own unwanted guest is a challenge. Hope the hormone treatment improves your numbers. To have change so quickly is a shock.

Surgery under the shoulders can really affect arm movement & I'm scared about them going deeper - flare is close to the edges of where they excised before.

Worrying won't help and I'm going to try and enjoy the days before I go back. Will keep you posted.

    Love sunnyx
