Feeling numb after diagnosis

Following a large tumour being removed from my partners colon on May 1st, he had a diagnosis last Thursday. He was told that the oncologist would call to discuss results next Thursday , however he received a call before that from a cancer care nurse regarding his wound from the op. She then proceeded to tell him that his tumour had been staged as a t4 n2 locally advanced . She could not explain really anything about it just that the oncologist would explain next week and tell him about survival rates and treatment.

we went straight on to the internet and are now seeing that he had only about 10% chance of surviving 5 years. We are in total shock. A diagnosis straight out of the blue and our minds in complete mush. A week seems a long time to wait to speak to the oncologist and the constant surging the net for answers

Thank you

  • Hi Billy,

ive had tooth trouble . Finally managed to see a dentist only to be told got to have an extraction and they are referring me to a hub because of covid to have it done this week. Only been in pain for 12 weeks!!

hubby saw consultant Thursday. Disappointingly after the scan it shows there's still some tumour left in the bowel. She doesn't think the chemo will get rid of it all so looks like another op. They will scan in 3 months to see what's going on. He started chemo Friday . As yet no side effects .Except he got a drink from the fridge! Big mistake. He won't do that again!
hope you are ok and Bren. I know you are always in the go but try to slow down with this heatwave On the way.

im not a fan of hot hot weather. The evenings are nice though to sit outside

  • At least they found it early, and you can be sure they'll get it all this time.

Now your partner is having chemo, keep him off citrus fruit, the acid can play hell.

Also no bio yougart, or blue cheese and the like.. Hope you get your tooth out soon.

    Hope you keep well.

P.s bren had quite a bit of her bowel removed when she was in her 30s, not cancer, gangrene. She was run over by a lorry surgeon repaired everything but missed damage to bowel bren got ill about a year later and they found it.she's been OK since. Just all the other things.

  • Hi billy, how are you keeping? I'm not too bad. Looks like finally getting my tooth sorted. My hubby touch wood had had no side effects from his chemo. Second one next Friday so fingers crossed for that. No chance for any gardening to take mind of things. Weather had changed so much. Cold and windy

  • Hi Lisa glad hubby's chemo is not playing up and making him ill.

Also glad you'll soon get your tooth finally fixed.

I'm plodding on got a bit of a stumack bug hopefully I'll go soon.

Bren still got water infection but Dr wants a sample so she's got to wait till they decide what to do.

Keep well and tell hubby to keep positive and keep fighting.

  • Hi Lisa,

Just wanted to send you some good wishes and hope you got the tooth sorted. I can't do anything when I've got toothache!

I was quite down for a while though I told myself I shouldn't be given what others are coping with. It was just the hospital sent me information not to go out between 11am and 3pm, wear wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves and factor 30 the rest of the time. Felt like such a big restriction especially when I'm avoiding buses (vulnerable on other health grounds) and it's a long walk anywhere so can't do within the times. Might have to get a bike!!

I really hope the chemo is going okay still for your hubby and that you are able to enjoy some of this sunnier weather. Not so good for me but I'd rather you and hubby got your sunny moments with the chemo. Looks set fair for a good few weeks to come!

My beastie is unfortunately growing back. Keep pretending it isn't happening. Guess I don't want more surgery yet - would rather have another month or two break. But am telling myself I must get in touch with GP next week and let GP decide.

Really hope you are keeping well. No need to reply. Just wanted you to know I hadn't forgotten you, but did hit the doldrums for a bit. Haven't been out much. Need to find some new ways of doing things!!

    Love sunnyx

  • Hi Billy,

Hope you are over the bugs and infections.

Thanks again for all your positivity! I haven't done as well as I could have there. To save me typing it twice see note to Lisa above.

    But I'm back fighting now.

    Mustn't let the beasties win!

    Love, sunnyx

  • Hi sunny glad your back fighting again.

I'm waiting on results for bone and ct scan and blood test.

Been put on extra hormone therapy, hope my bust doesn't get any bigger or I'll have to get a bra. It's bad enough with hot flushes every day.

    Love Billy xxx

Brens antibiotics will be dropped off tomorrow hope there not same ones she's been on because they don't work told them she needs stronger ones.

  • Hi Sunny and Billy.

lovely to hear from you both. You both are always so positive and I'm wishing you the best for results and sunny for your restrictions of what you can do . It's hard isn't it, the weather is lovely but we are just in the garden still. Not venturing out. Hubby's chemo not too bad so far. He's only had two but so far all seems ok. He has been told he will have another op but not sure when. Probably after the chemo I would think.
tooth finally out. Look like I've gone a round with Tyson fury but at least it will get better.

please keep in touch as it brightens my day to hear from you both

  • Hi Billy,

Hope results as good as they can be re tests.

Lots of sympathy re the hot flushes. I'm getting night sweats that wake me several times a night.

Getting the right meds can be a nightmare especially with difficulty in seeing GPs now. Sometimes it's a different class of antibiotics that is needed rather than stronger ones. Good luck finding the right combination.

  • Hi Lisa,

Really pleased treatment going ok to date and you are able to enjoy the garden.

I expect there will be a scan after chemo (just in case you get super lucky and there's no need for an op, though best to be prepared for surgery).

Sorry the dental treatment was brutal – hopefully the swelling will settle soon and you are no longer in pain.

Staying in so much means I have caught up on all my home tasks. Never thought I could run out of things to tidy. Definitely a first! Might have to find some new hobbies that don't need good eyes.

    Love, sunnyx
