Feeling numb after diagnosis

Following a large tumour being removed from my partners colon on May 1st, he had a diagnosis last Thursday. He was told that the oncologist would call to discuss results next Thursday , however he received a call before that from a cancer care nurse regarding his wound from the op. She then proceeded to tell him that his tumour had been staged as a t4 n2 locally advanced . She could not explain really anything about it just that the oncologist would explain next week and tell him about survival rates and treatment.

we went straight on to the internet and are now seeing that he had only about 10% chance of surviving 5 years. We are in total shock. A diagnosis straight out of the blue and our minds in complete mush. A week seems a long time to wait to speak to the oncologist and the constant surging the net for answers

Thank you

  • Hi Lisa

Bit chaos just now bren been having bad side effects on her new meds. Checked with Dr told give her a sleeping tablet in the morning so she's relaxed, so she's drugged up night and day now. Dr reckons as bren gets usto meds effects will wear off.

Other bad news. My cancer decided to give me a nasty bite other day (got blood results) got more scans and try different meds and more tests probably take two or three months. Then they decide what to do.

Bella finished her antibiotics today so got to get a water sample soon to see if it's finally gone..

Glad your finally getting rid of all the old stuff, probably mostly hubby's but he won't notice till he wants something then you pretend he's lost it again.

Glad your feeling more normal today.

    Best wishes.

    Love.. Billy xxx

  • Billy ,

im sorry to hear about your results . I'm sending you all of my best wishes and hopes for the next few months. I get the feeling that after a diagnosis it's just a constant waiting game until the next scan next set of tests. Guess I will just have to harden up to it.
Maybe we will feel less anxious when the lockdown is eased although I'm a bit scared to go out at all.

    have a nice day billy

    thinking if you x

  • Hi Lisa.                                                                         Hope you are both as well as can be i know you'll be thinking of things alot. Remember keep positive.

Finally got good news about bren, psychiatrist says she can come off some of her meds slowly of course especially as she's been on them for over 14 years..

I'm still waiting and plodding on as normal bit of a shock at first but settled down now.

    Love Billy xxx

  • Hi BILLY,

    Hi Billy,

that's such good news about BREN. I'm so pleased for you and her. Glad you can keep positive. It's hard isn't it?

I had a bad day yesterday, was thinking so negatively I was scaring myself. Today much better. Thinking today maybe hubby can be one of the positive statistics.

thats made my day hearing from you though

have a lovely rest of Sunday. Got my first counselling tomorrow

    hugs

  • Hi Lisa,

I am so sorry to hear your news, I know completely how you feel. My husband was taken ill at the beginning of lock down he could not hold and food or drink down and his stomach was swollen. We got turned away from a and e told that we should not be there for that and to go home, anyway long storey short he finally got taken in to be told on his own that he had a rare stomach cancer that has spread through the lining and had created fluid in the abdomen. He was given a prognosis of 2-3 months.

thankfully he has health insurance and we are now working with an oncologist to try and prolong his life. He is only 42 years old and we did not expect to hear this, we have been in and out of hospital and I still can not get my head round the fact that he will be taken from us at some point. Watching him suffer is the hardest part and most the time I like you feel numb.

I wish I could help with some advise, but the only thing I can think to do is to try and stay positive because they wrong sometimes. My mum has a brain cancer and at one point was given 2-3 months but five years later she is still here.

  • Hi,

Im so sorry to hear your news. As you've probably read on my post I've really struggled with my partners diagnosis. I've had lovely encouraging words on the site and it has really helped me.
I think lockdown has increased my anxieties. I'm really hoping that he gets the treatment .

my best wishes to you both
