Feeling numb after diagnosis

Following a large tumour being removed from my partners colon on May 1st, he had a diagnosis last Thursday. He was told that the oncologist would call to discuss results next Thursday , however he received a call before that from a cancer care nurse regarding his wound from the op. She then proceeded to tell him that his tumour had been staged as a t4 n2 locally advanced . She could not explain really anything about it just that the oncologist would explain next week and tell him about survival rates and treatment.

we went straight on to the internet and are now seeing that he had only about 10% chance of surviving 5 years. We are in total shock. A diagnosis straight out of the blue and our minds in complete mush. A week seems a long time to wait to speak to the oncologist and the constant surging the net for answers

Thank you

  • Hi Lisa,

Sorry you woke up again at 3am! That can happen to me too. I usually read for a while before trying to go back to sleep – otherwise my mind can play things over and over too much.

Enjoy your walk and then sitting in the garden. Doing nada is fine especially when the weather is so lovely.

It will be good when hubby is able to go for more walks. Wound healing can take a while.

    Good wishes to you bothxx

  • H4ello Lisa,

Sorry but  l have only just found the chance to read of  your news, since l have had to do a lot of work with my cattle and sheep over the past two days,so working until dark ,which is a long time coming up here on the Hebrides.Spring a nd summer combines  and comes later this far north, but comes in with an almighty rush,so a lot of jobs seem to pack in together

Thankfully it does not sound to have moved forward,so hopefully the chemo will stop it progressing any further,so its good news that you have a quick start date. The one thing for sure is that your other half will be getting so many pictures taken, although none of them would be the type to grace a front page, lets wish they all continue to show clear healthy organs.

Like the others so rightly all suggest, rest and relax to be in the best possible position for chemo,in body and in mind,

                                                be kind to yourselves,

                                                                                        David

  • David,

thank you so much for taking the time to read and reply to my post with the busy days that you are having. I'm hoping that you find some time for yourself. Also thank you for your previous posts that really did make me stop and look at things logically and not through sheer panic.
to be fair I think looking back it was fuelled by the nurse telling us it was stage four when it seems that what she meant was the tumour was stage four not the cancer. As I said once that was in my head it all unravelled very quickly. It's funny because today I don't feel any calmer. I think it's the stress of yesterday.
I have a colleague that hails from Stornaway, my Scottish geography isn't that good but that looks an absolutely beautiful part of the world. Considering all the stress with COVID I'm thinking that lots of people will be looking to head off to places away from h&b

we are looking ahead and know that treatment is very lengthy but at least we are in that position to be able to go on that journey. I apologise for my ramblings .

thank you David and all the best for your own health and what lies ahead for you

  • Hi Lisa,

    I totally crashed out yesterday!

Strangely today I have more energy than I've had in months. It's like a switch being flicked back on...

My stitches took much longer than I expected to heal (one of them was more than a biopsy given it took a good month to recover) and I've realised now that I'm delighted not to have got results because I feel well and I don't have to think about things until the hospital contact me. I might as well enjoy the rediscovered energy, lack of pain, etc.

Hope you have a good day. Can't believe you only got a washing up bowl. Hope it was a lovely bright colour!

Have a good weekend and I echo what Billy says belowx

  • Hi Billy,

Just to say thinking of you as well as Lisa and hoping all goes well for your call tomorrow morning.

You do seem very well organised with meals etc.

Hope your weekend is a good onex
