Feeling numb after diagnosis

Following a large tumour being removed from my partners colon on May 1st, he had a diagnosis last Thursday. He was told that the oncologist would call to discuss results next Thursday , however he received a call before that from a cancer care nurse regarding his wound from the op. She then proceeded to tell him that his tumour had been staged as a t4 n2 locally advanced . She could not explain really anything about it just that the oncologist would explain next week and tell him about survival rates and treatment.

we went straight on to the internet and are now seeing that he had only about 10% chance of surviving 5 years. We are in total shock. A diagnosis straight out of the blue and our minds in complete mush. A week seems a long time to wait to speak to the oncologist and the constant surging the net for answers

Thank you

  • Hello lisa,

right, lets focus on locally advanced, locally advanced is spread to local neighbouring lymph nodes from the site of the colon tumour which equals the staging number of n2, That is to say the cancer cells have only spread  (advanced, gone forward ,moved to ) from the tumour into lymph nodes that are( local, adjoining, nearby ) close to it

It does not nean advanced in the sense of no return, off you trot, go and meet the man with a sickle over his shoulder. Sorry but l am really aiming for clarity and sensing that you are not picking up on what people on the posting are trying to impart to you,so l hope this does not cause offence,

                                     David

  • Hi Lisa,

I know you are not stupid.

You are going through a difficult time and I understand the impact of the past trauma.

It is really good you have booked yourself a session to help deal with that. It is not easy for you.

I guess we're all going to have to be a bit boring and go on repeat here because locally advanced really isn't the same as advanced cancer.

Maybe if you see that TNM stuff in terms of a line/ruler so you go from T to N to M and as David pointed out you didn't get to the end of the N let alone getting as far as M that will help you.

So it is NOT the worst scenario!!

    So many hugsxxx

And brilliant on you for doing that floor!

  • Hi Lisa,

    Consider the following:

    reindeer      deer rein

    hot dog       dog hot

    fishpond     pond fish

Maybe it will help remind you that you are making big error in looking just at the word advanced and not what it sits alongside or where.

And while I might if absolutely starving eat some pond fish I would never ever eat a fishpond or a dog.

Trying to make you laugh. Probably doing a bad job of it. Humour is not my strong point.

    xxxx

  • Thank you . I know I'm being silly .
just had some lovely flowers delivered from friends

thars cheered me up no end x

  • David,

it doesn't cause offence at all. It's what I need clarity

always half empty in my world I feel so awful when do many people are in our position and I just can't see clearly through I am trying

    thanks

    lisa

  • Lisa nobody on the forum thinks your stupid don't worry about that your just very stressed over something you have no control over. I understand because years ago i was having problems with being sick and passing out with no warning, seen Dr regularly couldn't find anything wrong apart from blood tests were all over the place i had three tests same over three days all came back different. ECG's u name it bren started just like you i did finish up in hospital going into a coma. Then found i had to keep taking meds for the rest of my life or i go into a coma and die. Bren took ages to except i was OK and not going to drop dead. But it was helpful really when i got cancer she excepted it easier. Still not nice but easier.

If I'm talking about myself and bren to much please tell me off..

    Billy xx

  • Thanks Lisa,

Phew!   hopefully some of all the advice from everybody will stick with you,but l know its a battle within yourself.Just too say that after my cancer l am not living with it as someone suggested, l am living far better than previously, without it.The tumour was removed, the chemo stopped any spread, and l have carried on with life with no anchor to hold me back, but with far greater appreciation of everything before and around me.Given time l hope you get to achieve the same,

                                                                                         David
