Feeling numb after diagnosis

Following a large tumour being removed from my partners colon on May 1st, he had a diagnosis last Thursday. He was told that the oncologist would call to discuss results next Thursday , however he received a call before that from a cancer care nurse regarding his wound from the op. She then proceeded to tell him that his tumour had been staged as a t4 n2 locally advanced . She could not explain really anything about it just that the oncologist would explain next week and tell him about survival rates and treatment.

we went straight on to the internet and are now seeing that he had only about 10% chance of surviving 5 years. We are in total shock. A diagnosis straight out of the blue and our minds in complete mush. A week seems a long time to wait to speak to the oncologist and the constant surging the net for answers

Thank you

  • Hope you're calming down now and in the garden relaxing or weeding, with the radio on again.

Some people call it grade some call it stage. Remember both me and David's are stage 4 it doesn't mean that's it treatment still works..we are proof of that.

    Billy xx

P.s remember wait till Thursday things could be explained a lot clearer., make a list of questions you may want to ask and make sure your clear about the answers.

  • Tumour size relates to tumour stage rather than overall staging?

As Billy says you go through different tumour sizes so that first you get a T number, then you get an N number and only after that - if there were additional metastatic spread (advanced stage 4 bowel cancer not tumour size grade) - you would additionally get an M number.

It's called advanced bowel cancer once it gets into places like the lungs and liver.

At least that is my understanding but I am not an expert!!

    So many hugsxxx

  • I'm afraid the sick feeling has come back.
im trying to relax but it's working today.
so many unanswered questions that I don't want to know the answers too

does anyone know if 13 nodes is a lot  be infected? Out if 18

how can I stop my mind from working overtime.
    again and agsin

  • All we were told was it was t4 n 2

locally  advanced . But now I'm convinced she said t4 m2

although that's why I'm confused if it's locally that it can be m2

ive got to stop this I'm going mad I'm sick to the stomach now with worry

    lisa

i hope you are having a good day today and are probably getting sick to the back teeth of my bevkwsrdw and forwards x

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

Remember what I said about my mum with her breast cancer. She had cancer in a lot of nodes. And she is still here after 24 years. She also had tissue beyond the breast removed - a lot of muscle. Her cancer was locally advanced but not metastatic not stage 4.

    Every cancer is individual.

You have a treatment plan and the surgeon is hoping to catch everything.

We are all sending you positive thoughts and good wishesxxx

  • Lisa

    Billy has answered this point.

You did not mishear that one because you always get an N number first.

I am writing here what you have told us:

    t4n2 locally advanced tumour

    advanced tumour not advanced cancer

the tumour has spread to the nodes so it has advanced beyond the bowel

my mother's tumours were advanced in that sense too

advanced cancer with metastatic spread is not something you have given evidence of so as Billy emphasises it is not the worst-case scenario

my mother had additional surgery as her specific tumours were not suitable for chemo (not all breast cancers are), she also had radiotherapy and hormonal treatments

chemo can both shrink tumours that are local and mop up cells that may have spread

really hope all the treatments go wellxx

  • Hello Lisa,,

you are worrying about something that you are already aware of but have not understood, perfectly understandable in the circumstances.

please sit down, take a deep breath, calm yourself and read several times

There is a grading system T1 to T4, 4 being the highest which relates to size of tumour Your husbands was 4 which you already know and was measured at removal

There is a staging system N1 to N3 , with 3 being the highest and relates to spread through the lymphatic system.Put simply 1 is spread to an adjoining lymph node,2 is spread to local neighbouring nodes, and 3 is spread to distant nodes adjoining other organs throughout the body, by far and away the most common spread is to the Liver.Your husbands spread was to local nodes, which was confirmed at the time of removal. Also at that time, the surgeon would have checked visually at other nodes surrounding neighbouring organs whilst the chest cavity was open, the liver, kidneys pancreas. If anything abnormal was spotted surrounding these they would have been removed and your grading would have been N3 signifying distant spread--IT WAS NOT

As l said at the start ,you do know all of this, hopefully now you will be able to understand that, and at least now you will have the chance to get this clear in your head so as to be able to ask the right questions of your consultant this thursday.

You need to move on from mindless worries to controlled concerns where you are able to gain a realistic appraisal of of your true situation, and how best you move forward with the best plan of returning your lives back to where you wish them to be ,

Oh Dear.l am afraid that my words are echoing those af the medical professionals, but l really have tried to be precise in order for you to understand you are worrying over a resolved issue and you should be focusing on things ahead of  you ,thats once again with concerns kept within context

Lisa ,l really hope this helps  you, beyond today, thursday, and into your future, if so l will have achieved something very worthwhile today,

remember the three C's, calm  controlled concern,

                                                                                                                            David

  • Lisa please relax and enjoy sunshine.

There are hundreds of lymph nodes around the body and i mean HUNDREDS they're around the neck and out to the arms, all around the body down to the pelvis and hips.

M doesn't come before N in this equation.

Please do some gardening before hubby throws you in the fish pond.

    Relax please. Best wishes.

    Billy xx

  • David

thank you for your precise to the the point answer. I do know what she said and it is the locally advanced with the a word being the thing I'm concentrating on. That word in itself is scaring the **** out of me.
Ive convinced  myself that it's the worst now and all objectiveness if that's a word had gone out of the window . I've made a counsellors appointment for the 8th . I really do appreciate all your input into making me see what's what but feel I've gone off in my own path and just trying to turn back

msybe there is a bit of hope

    Lisa

  • That has  made me laugh.
I'm such a selfish person feeling like this. I can't bear it being the worst news for my partner . In my defence the previous time in my life had made me unbelievably anxious and scared.
I do appreciate all you kind thoughts and I just want to emphasise I'm not a stupid person I have just built up and up and up in my mind until it feels like an explosion

thsnk you again for my chuckle

I've just washed the floor so at least I've gone something

    Lisa
