What is involved in mastectomy nowadays?

I trained as a nurse 55 years agon when radical mastectomy was being developed.  Not an elegant procedure.

I am to have a mastectomy.  Could someone please tell me what is involved nowadays?

Thank you for your help.

  • Hi there ..

I had a grade 3 breast cancer in 2017 .. I had a total right masectomy... which I was scared witless... even taking full dose anti depressants the week befor ... but on the morning, just wanted it over ..

I'd elected to stay in over night as I get low blood pressure... I was hoping for a morphine drip after as lymph node removal too .. as that's what I had with hysterectomy years befor ...

The day post op ... couldn't believe how little pain .. just a couple of paracetamol.... though under arm was tender ... lots of others have said the same .. one buddy on here was home that evening watching t.v ... they usually put a drain in ... and differs how long it's in ..

I was dreading looking at the scar ... but as I looked down , I thought l can live with that .. now the scar did get swollen a week after ... and needed draining twice .. it is just  a white line now .. I look at it like they took my boob but gave me back something more precious.... time ... to see my granddaughter grow up .. and see family .. and to me, every day is a bonus ..

Mind if I were young think I'd have felt differently ... I was 63 at the time .. it's not a ride in the park, but if you get your head round it, it is doable... looking back the scariest part of the whole thing is the waiting for it to happen ...  think the operation must have come a long way in all those years ... and there's lots of us breast lasses on here... and those I started with are all still here, 3 years on ...

Welcome to our little chat room .. there's always someone here will help you through ... Chrissie xx

  • Hi

my mum had a mastectomy back in the day over 30 ago now

it was awful really bad scaring and up to the armpit

she had radio therapy  and had 10 good years afterwards she never really settled with it her nerves had been bad all her life

I never thought that I would have breast cancer I honestly thought hers was due to a bad lifestyle

    silly me !

mine was picked up on a routine mammogram

lots of dcis and a very small non palpable ductal

    cancer

I was a mess my surgeon was lovely and help my fears and explained she could do reconstruction straight away and thought I would be fine

    and I was

it's not a boob as such but dressed I look fine

not much pain try to keep the drains in as long as possible

    Ive given up being vain

fortunately I didn't have any other treatment

it's a great big leap of faith and nearly 4 years on I'm fine

so grap all the help you can get I hope it all goes well

  • Thank you for the support.

I did have a cancer in the other breast 6 years ago and with mastectomy and chemotherapy I am still sufficiently alive and kicking to have now got one in the other breast.

For the previous mastectomy I needed to spend 36 hours in ICU post op and for it to be seen "routine" to treat the mastectomy as a day case strikes me as a bit ot a leap of faith.

That is my worry that I would like help with

Thank you all for a wonderful chat room
