Survival after second breast cancer

Hodgkins treated with mantle radiotherapy 50 years ago

Intraductal Ca R breast 13 years ago treated by wide biopsy and local radiotherapy.

Ca R breast 8 cm 7 years ago treated by radical mastectomy and chemotherapy

Now Ca L breast 3 cm just diagnosed.

Finding it hard to discover the survival statistics for second breast cancer.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

Thank you in anticipation

    Hi Wharfie,

    Welcome to our forum.

My, you have been through the mill haven’t you? Were all your cancers of the same type and grade? I am not a medic, just another cancer pilgrim. I suspect that the aforementioned factors will determine the survival statistics. It will also depend upon whether your cancers have all been primaries or whether you have had any secondaries, what age you are, whether you have had any lymph node involvement.

I have only had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years. The second bout was just a year after the first. I was fortunate that both were primaries of the same type – Mucinous Carcinoma. I had no lymph node involvement and was only grade 1. I was also hormone responsive. I had a lumpectomy at first followed by Tamoxifen. For the second bout, I had a double mastectomy followed by Letrozole for 6 years.

The type of breast cancer is important, as some cancers are more aggressive than others. It is great to hear that you are still here after 50 years, so I’m hoping that your cancer is not too aggressive. Your new lump is fortunately not too big. What have you been told about treatment? Don’t be afraid to ask anything at all that bothers you and, make sure that you understand everything that your consultant is telling you.

The person best able to give you a prognosis is your consultant, as s/he will have all your medical details to hand. It is always a good idea to draw up a list of questions before each appointment, as it is all too easy to forget important questions in the heat of the moment.

I do hope that you get an answer to your question soon. Please let us know as soon as you find out. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you both for your kind replies.

My enquiry is truly about where I could find published material on survival from second breast cancers.

I am fairly nerdy and computer savvy but this task I am finding difficult.

    Any hints gratefully accepted

    Hi Wharfie,

I would phone your breast care nurse and ask her. She should be able to find these details out, even if she doesn't know the answe immediately.

As I said above, it is impossible to predict without having the above details to hand.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
