Chemotherapy before operation grade 2 ductal breast cancer

Hi there

New to this, just diagnosed on 27 April, do not know the stage, 4cm lump ductal, grade 2, in lymph node... , have been told I will be getting chemotherapy before a lumpectamy. I looked up I think it's called neo adjuvant therapy?

Really worried my immune system will be shot down before the operation, so might not heal the same/make it!!  All others seem to have to operation and then either chemotherapy or other treatments after.

I kind of understand the reasoning with doing it this way with covid 19...but am absolutely terrified, have any others had treatment this way around please?

Oncologist appt on Monday, so any advice!/help/info would be hugely appreciated!!

Thank you

A.

  • First of all so sorry to hear this, I haven't had any experience with this, I went to the doctors on monday cause I have bloody discharge from my right nipple went to the breast clinic wednesday and had an ultrasound but they said they couldn't see anything and I have to now do a diary and go back in a few weeks time and am terrified there is something wrong, could I ask you what your symptoms where

  • Hi A

I have the same as you but grade 3 & in lymph nodes, they've said the same to me. Chemo 1st to shrink it down as much as possible. Im sure they won't operate until its safe to do so.

I start my chemo a week on monday for 2 days.

I feel the same as you, its frightening even more because of the situation with the virus. There's so many people in the same situation

I think you just need to keep yourself as safe as possible (shielded) whilst you're having treatment, i was told this at my last appointment on Thursday.

If there's anything else i can help you with or just a chat, please let me know.

    Take care

    Karen xx

  • Hi there, thank you for your response.   I am sorry you are having to wait to find out what is going on, the waiting is not easy.

In my case it was just that I found a large lump, only after diagnosis did I think, I have been tired alot.

Hopefully you will get on fine from now on and it turns out to be nothing sinister.

If I can help at anytime with anything let ne know.

    Kind wishes

  • Hi Karen,

Thank you so much for your response. While I truly wouldn't wish this on anyone,  it is super  helpful to chat to someone dealing with the same issues.

I was told at breast clinic will start at end of May... , Op in September,  have you been given  a time frame for treatments and operation?  Are you shielding already?   Did they do more tests at Oncologist?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions, have so many racing througts.. ,even been trying some  natural healing  methods but I think I nearly gave myself a heart attack.... so decided, sound and sensible advice is best.

Please don't feel obligated to answer all the questions   Any tips or advice will certainly be gratefully received, but not expected... please don't feel you have to.   I really hope your treatment goes well Karen!!

If at any time I can help you in any way or you just want to chat, am here for you too.   Take care and stay safe.

    Kind wishes

  • Hi Angela

I had blood test & bp done on thursday when i saw oncologist, she was very informative.  On monday i have to have an ecg & a liver screen later in week & another scan. At the moment shes talking about starting chemo on the following monday for two days, (mon & tues) hopefully this doesn't change.

They've not given me a date for surgery yet, but have said 6 lots of chemo which will take place every three weeks, the oncologist has given me a list of the chemo treatments I'll be having as well.

At the end of chemo they ll re scan me to see how much the lump & lymph nodes have shrunk ( a lot im hoping) . Then the decision will be made about the op.

I'm only going out for appointments & the odd walk when its less busy, apart from that i stay home.

It's no problem at all answering your questions, im the same & i think any support & advice helps so much, I'd rather speak to someone thats been or going through it than try to find the answers elsewhere

Please dont hesitate to message me anytime, I'll keep you up to date with how things progress.

Hopefully they start your treatment soon, i think sitting & waiting makes you feel so much worse, too much time to think.

    You take care of yourself

  • Hi AJMR

I was diagnosed with grade 3idc her 2+ er+ 4cm lump and a second lump in same breast but no lymph node involvement last September. This was obviously before Covid19 and was given 6 sessions of neo adjuvant chemotherapy. I was informed that this was to shrink the tumour before surgery, which it did.  My tumour virtually disappeared after the first three sessions. I had my mastectomy in February and am now recovering well. Chemo isn't a walk in the park but so worth it for the results that I had.  I have to have herceptin injections for 12 months and will need letrozole hormone therapy for 10 years.

I was hoping to work throughout my chemo but as I work in a school my oncologist didn't think it was wise..so was quite looking forward to resuming my normal life following the op.. however covid has put paid to that for the next three Months

I hope everything goes ok for you in the coming months. Look after yourself and rest when you can

If you want to ask any questions please feel free to message me.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear you are going through this. I was diagnosed in January with grade3 triple negative breast cancer stage 3 with 2 lymph nodes. Measuring 5.8x 4.6 cm. I started chemotherapy on 4th feb which was weekly paclitaxel and carboplatin  . I have just had my mid way scan and tumour has shrunk to 2.6 no change to lymph nodes as yet  i am currently waiting to start next regime on wednesday then surgery afterwards not sure yet what surgery this will be.

I am also shielding due to the virus and if i can help in any way please just ask .

    Thinking of you

  • Hi Angela

Feel free to message anytime...even if it's the middle of the night...I'm often up a few times due to insomnia .. possibly from herceptin or letrozole...or a combination of both .  I'm happy to answer any question even if it's personal.  I've not actually used the messaging system but I'm sure we'll get the hang of it

    Take care
