Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer

Hi everyone, I went to see the specialist last week for my biopsy results after finding a lump in my right breast, within a couple of week it doubled in size, the specialist said its invasive lobular breast cancer and I'm oestrogen positive, they mentioned it's a group 2 which I believe is the quickness of growth. They did say it's just in the breast from the scan but wanted a MRI scan which I went for last Thursday, Saturday I got a follow up appointment for the 29th April but then on Tuesday i recieved a letter changing that to the 22nd. I know no one is the same treatment wise but i just wanted to connect with others who have had this type. The day before I got the results my grandad also passed away who I cared for, my head is all over the place. Sorry I've waffled. Thanks

  • Hi Lisa,

I too have lobular stage 2 breast cancer and I know what your going through but to lose your Grandad, on top of all your worries must be heart breaking.

Please have a look at my profile so you can see my journey so far and if you have any questions, please contact me.

    Kind regards

    Helen

  • Hi Lisa,

I am six months on from where you are now and it's amazing how much I now know that I didn't know six months ago.  I also had a MRI scan, which I later learned was not necessary as I had opted to have a full mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy and the MRI scan was just to show the size of the tumour as lobular tumours don't show up on mammogram in the same way as some others and if I had wanted a lumpectomy it would have helped to know what they were looking at. As it happened my surgeon said he was glad I had opted for the mastectomy as the tumour was bigger than he had expected from the scans and he may not have been able to get sufficient margins, despite the fact I had "ample" breasts. His words!

i have been very lucky in that I had the mastectomy with sentinel node biopsy, which I recovered from very quickly then I had to have a further operation to strip the lymph nodes as there was some debatable evidence of cancer in one of the sentinel nodes. That was a bit more painful but I was fine within a couple of weeks! Thankfully, the lymph nodes were clear, so it hadn't got out of the breast area. Because I'd had a mastectomy I didn't need radiotherapy to kill any cancer traces left in the breast and because of my age, I'm 73, chemotherapy wasn't recommended as the side effects could be worse than if I was younger. My tumour was exactly the same as yours, so I am now taking a daily hormone blocker to stop my body producing oestrogen to feed a new tumour.  There were a few minor side effects from that, but six months down the line I am in fine fettle.  I feel well and am back to my old self. Last year, before I found my lump I had been totally exhausted for a couple of months and couldn't get interested in things I used to love. Now I'm back to all my old hobbies and life feels great, or it will do when I can go shopping again.
As I said, I have been very lucky, and there is no reason the think you would be any different.

  • Thanks Christine, I'm pleased you replied and told me your story, I see the specialist next Wednesday and it cant come quick enough just so I know a plan x

  • Hi Lisa

I have recently been diagnosed with invasive lobular breast cancer too.  I was very lucky to have my lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy 10 days ago despite all the Covid19 problems.  No problems afterwards at all - just took paracetamol the day after.  I was a bit tired for a couple of days and had a little nap when I needed too.
Had to take my own dressings off at home today and could have a proper shower and washed my hair - I was a bit concerned about getting the showerproof dressing too wet before.   Scar under my arm is a bit longer than I thought it would be and the one on my breast is shaped around the nipple so should be fairly unnoticeable.
I do bruise easily so my breast is quite colourful with the added extras of bright blue dye and purple glue!
I see my oncologist next week to get results of node biopsy and staging etc.  I am expecting to have radiotherapy and hormone blockers soon.
I have big boobs 40h and found the hardest part was finding an unwired bra in my size.  Could probably start my own shop with the ones I have found unsuitable.

I am sorry to hear about your grandad.  We are all living in such difficult times at the moment but it is important to remain positive.  You will come through this and there are lots of people on this site to give you help and support xxx

  • Thank you, we are allowed 10 mourners at the minute but have to sit apart and are doing it online for family, we will do a memorial at a later date but we are just pleased we can be there at this awful time x
