Tongue Cancer

Hi

im a 36 year old male and have just been diagnosed with tongue cancer. I have a small lump about the size of half a pea on the side of my tongue.

i have been for my CT scan and the surgeon says it looks good. He is hoping that it can just be cut out, but may need to have my lymph nodes removed too, but is hopeful that it can just be cut out.

i love my wife very much but she has a bad habit of investing in too stuff. She has found something saying that even after it has been removed that I may only have up to 5 years to live as it was tongue cancer.

i would be very grateful if there was someone on here who has either had tongue cancer or knows what this is all about?

thanks

  • Hello Weegaz23,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat. You have come to the right forum to talk to others who have been affected by tongue cancer as we have quite a few forum members who have been diagnosed with tongue cancer in the past. It's reassuring news that your consultant said that from the CT scan it looks good and hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the surgery.

If you type the words 'tongue cancer' in the forum search which is located in the blue banner at the top, you will be able to see many other relevant threads on the subject and respond to any that you wish to engage with. For example, [@Nicola2209]‍  ‍ started this thread nearly 7 years ago which is still active and has had 59 pages worth of responses. Don't hesitate to read it and respond if you wish as there are so many others on that thread who have had to go through tongue cancer treatment.

We also have detailed information on our website on this page on tongue cancer which I hope will help answer some of the questions you may have.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 and you can reach them on that number Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you want to talk things through with them.

I hope this helps a little and that you get chatting here soon with others who have been diagnosed with tongue cancer before and had the treatment for it.

    Best wishes,

  • I have just had a biopsy for mouth cancer, not the same as tongue, lump in my cheek. I just wanted to post to say I am glad for you that you have such support on here and hope that the kindness on here allays for wife's fears.

My old boss from years ago had cancer, l think long before I knew him, he smoked but was an ex smoker when i first met him. I worked with him years, he got promotion, and was still working there when i left, very much alive and kicking, I think he had hodgkins but not sure, but I wanted to mention him as he was in his 30's, when I met him, and survived.

  • Hi, I had a tumour removed from under my tongue, and lymph nodes both sides of my neck. That was the second week in Jan. Only in hospital 2 days, and back to work a couple of weeks later.

Googling isn't a good idea, apart from the recognized sites(such as this).   Best thing is to listen to your surgeon and his/her team.  I'm sure you will be back for another appointment, make a few notes before you go, or you'll be back home wishing you'd asked something else.

Easy to say, but try not to worry too much.  If I had to go back tomorrow and have it all done again it wouldn't bother me at all.

All the best, and keep safe.   Cheers.  Col.

  • Hi Weegaz

There are some very good helpful threads re tongue cancer and some very helpful kind folks who have been in the unfortunate position as you find yourself in.

I had my surgery just over a year ago. So anything I can help with just ask away.

Keep in mind that there are different levels of cancer from early to late from T1 to T4. It goes without saying the earlier its caught the better the prognosis.

There is so much scary stuff out on the net it really is best not to go there. Instead be guided by your surgeon afterall he is the man that knows. And by what youve written he sounds confidant of a very good outcome. We have members on here well beyond the 5yr mark testimony to our Drs.

Some surgeons prefer to do a selective neck dissection even with N0 nodes, but dont worry too much on that as its really a belts and braces approach and you may or may not have it done.

You are young at 36 and that certainly goes in your favour as well.

One thing I would say is eat eat eat in the meantime and enjoy all your favorite foods. Probably not needed if your op is small you will be back eating well in no time :-)

Take care come back and keep in touch. x

  • Hi @Weegaz23

I had a very similar cancer to yourself. Male and a small lump on the tongue and they cut out the the part of my tongue with the cancer. I was 23 at the time.

It is best to focus on the op to get it removed, don't worry about after in regards to the lymph nodes as it will just keep your head spinning with worry. And also don't worry about what it will be like after the op. Just focus on getting the op done first.

I am not sure what your wife found, but in Oct 2014 I was in your postion, I then had an operation to remove the lump in my tongue. I was in hospital three days then I was released. Within a few weeks I started to feel better. After they found a tiny amount of cells in my neck lynth nodes and I had them out to in a second op. It took a little longer to start to feel better, but I was able to . The first few weeks after any op are the most tough but then you recover and adapt, at a young age as we both are it is even quicker!

I passed my five years last October, and was signed off as cured in Jan. Please take each day as it comes and don't focus on the five years. You will get though it.

    All the best

  • Hi I hope you don’t mind me messaging but I was just searching for anyone who has had radiotherapy to the tongue/mouth. I had a lump on my tongue which I had removed in February and last month I finished my radiotherapy so just looking for some experiences in this

    thanks

  • Hi there,

I am also 36 and had 2 biopsies from my tongue. I also have ear pain, face numbness, sore throat on one side and head pressure. I have convinced myself I have cancer and I am so worried waiting for my results.

I guess what I'd like to know first off is how long did it take for your results to come back? And did you have any of the other symptoms I have?

Also do those symptoms mean the cancer has spread. Such a worrying time. Hope you will be okay and glad to hear your doctor is positive. Hopefully you've had your surgery and it was a success.

    Marie

  • Hi Marie

ill just tell you about MY Whole cancer.

they are pretty quick at getting you in when it's head and neck cancer as it can be very aggressive. If you do have it you will be put to the top of the list for treatment as they want to treat it quickly.

the only other symptom I had was a horrible metallic taste in my mouth

this is my post from Facebook

    GARY-1    CANCER-0

I’m not one for putting stuff up on Facebook. But I think this is important.

At the beginning of December I noticed a lump on the side of my tongue, as usual I just ignored it. Thinking I’m too busy plus I’m 35 pretty healthy it’ll be nothing.

But as it started to get sore I went to doctors. I was treated over December for different things but nothing worked.

I was then referred to the oral & maxillofacial surgery in March where I had a biopsy taken.
8 weeks ago I was told I had tongue CANCER!!!!

Six weeks ago I had an operation to remove a good part of my tongue to try and remove the cancer tumour.

Four weeks ago I got the results of the surgery and unfortunately the tumour was bigger than expected and could possibly have spread to my lymph nodes in my neck.

Two weeks ago I went in for a second operation to remove all the lymph nodes in the right side of my neck.

Today I got my results from operation and am over the moon to have been told that they managed to remove it. I’m not classed as cancer free yet.
I’ll still have to have check ups and scans for the next 5 years Incase it comes back, then I’ll be cancer free if I have no reoccurrences. but as of now I can put it at the back of my mind and get on with my life.

I can’t thank my wife, family, friends and the team at the hospital enough for there support through this.

The point of me putting this up is, with all the terrible things going on in the world at present with Coronavirus, if you notice any new lumps, bumps, bleeds any unusual things going on with your body. DONT PUT OFF GETTING IT CHECKED!!!!

If you do find yourself like me and all the others with or had cancer. Your not on your own, As hard as it is think positive.....

    DON’T LET CANCER WIN........

im not always on here but if you would like to ask any other questions I'm more than happy to answer them.

  • Hi
