Chemo and Cold Cap

This is my first time posting to any forum ever. Nothing has ever prepared me for a breast cancer diagnosis and some days, I find it really hard to cope with.

My cancer is triple negative which brings its own challenges. I've had a lumpectomy and a sentinel node biopsy and next week is my first chemotherapy appointment.

I am already sick of hospital appointments and there are so many more to come. The things I had planned for this year did not include choosing wigs and preparing for chemo. It's so overwhelming.

I am sitting here trying to research my chemo drugs and how they will impact me. I am having FEC for 3 sessions every 3 weeks and then Paclitaxel for 9 weekly sessions. Has anyone taken the same combination and used the cold cap? Please could you advise how effective it was in preventing hair loss. Thank you.

  • Hi there, i totally understand. Its a world wind and rollercoaster of fruand anxiety BUT there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

I dont have the same cancer or chemo mix so i can't comment but nany ladies on here do. Search your cancer type or treatment.

I start 19th 4 cycles over 12 weeks. I already know how harsh mine will be and am dreading it. Its all these virus that freak me out. But CRUK and NEUK assure me its ok if i isolate to some degree.

Anyways i can say the dimples feather light wigs  are very natural  and can be cut to shape and style of your choice. £300 poss less on other online shops. They are made to ensure no irritation or weight and have real look scalps. You would get at least half of your money back after too by selling it.

Hope that help a little. Good luck.

  • Btw i declined the cold cap as a hairdresser i met told me her ecperience with clients was the hair still fell out and they said it was an uncomfortable experience and still lost hair just slower. But its personal choice so discuss with nurse.

As for research i found it overwhelming and ultimately you have to be careful and vigilant with all chemo mixes.

  • Thank you. I've had an appointment with a wig supplier as recommended by my oncologist. I've narrowed it down to 2 and they have called to say they are now in. My daughter will help me decide on the final one. I am still undecided about the cold cap. Good luck with your chemo too. x

  • Hi

i am going through the same thing as you. I also have triple negative breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy on the 20th feb and now awaiting chemotherapy. I go to se the oncology tomorrow to find out things.

did you have the lumpectomy first? How all is going well.

    xx

  • Hello rikki

I have had 3 FEC chemo so far with the cold cap and so far kept my hair, albeit a little thinner  I still could lose it but so far so good  the cold cap is horrible, you will hate it. The thought of putting it on makes me physically sick but I will tolerate anything to save my hair xxx

  • Hi. Yes I had lumpectomy first. That was on 31st January. Chemo starts on 20th March. I found the appointment with the oncologist very upsetting, even though he didn't say anything I wasn't prepared for. I hope your appointment goes ok. This triple negative thing is not nice to read about. What stage is your cancer? Mine was 1A but the grade of the tumour was 3. Good luck.

  • I'm scared about everything to do with chemo. I don't like the sound of the cold cap but still undecided about what to do. How much hair do you think you have lost? Good luck with the rest of your treatment. x

  • Hello again lovely

Probably 20% in volume. The cap has worked as I have a small bald patch from when the nurse didnt put it on properly.

I will be honest, you are going to have to be tough!  Keep on top of your sickness meds . Surround yourself with positive loved ones and most of all be kind to yourself and sleep when you can.  You can do this

  • Thank you. Good luck to you too. x

  • Hi....so sorry you have had to join the forum. My daughter didn't have the FEC chemo but did have 12 weekly sessions of Paclitaxel. She used the cold cap and kept her hair. She coped well with it and was prepared to do whatever it took to hopefully keep her hair.

It does make your hospital sessions longer. You have to wait at least 45 mins for it to freeze up before the infusion starts and then another 45-60 mins whilst it defrosts. It does make you feel cold and sleepy (until you get the obligatory coffee from Costa!)

If you decide to go with it get a good conditioner as you put this on under the cap to protect your hair.

She actually said her hair felt in better condition after her intense treatment finished.

She did lose her eyebrows and eyelashes though. She'd had her eyebrows microbladed before treatment started so it was hardly noticeable really

She's a very positive person. She's an.....it is what it is, I can't change it so I'll just get on with it.... type of person and that's just what she did.

Whatever you decide I wish you well and hope your treatment goes smoothly..... love Irene xxxx
