Oral cancer

Hello,  I have just been diagnosed with oral cancer and am waiting for further tests to establish the treatment needed.  I have been reading loads but can't seem to find the answer........my ear is very painful and I can actually feel something in it (not to the touch but sense wise).  I have also been experiencing some giddiness, not daily but at least 3 times in a week or so.  Is this common with oral cancer and if so why?  Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.

  • Thanks Kate  I had the best time . I have my lymph biopsy tomorrow & dentist on Friday . All my checks will then be complete & she can take her findings to her MDT meeting probably a week on Wednesday. Then hopefully this treatment can get started ! . I will mention my ear tomorrow . I hope you are doing ok Ginny x x

  • Glad you had a good time. Sorry, I'm a bit confused. So your consultant doesn't set the treatment? X

  • Hi treatment is usually set by your oncologist and his supporting team hence the term m d t which is multi disciplinary team can include your consultant Macmillan nurses there we’re 9 people when I met my oncologist as a lady with h p v 16+ tonsil cancer is pretty rare so they all wanted a look freaked me out for a minute or 2 .

imwasntreated at a major cancer centres  in Leeds my local hospital was Wakefield

  • Sorry chills I didn't reply I have only just seen it . Hazel is correct it's a team of people that set your treatment . I think they all bounce off each other and talk about you as an individual. I think it's encouraging and it will be the same for you . I actually think it's the same for all cancers . How are you doing x?

  • Hello Ginny, apologies I haven't picked up yur email until now.  Crazy times!! So, how are you and what has happened since we were last in touch?  I've had all my scans and consultations and going in hospital Wednesday for operation.  Apart from tongue and surrounding muscle I also have a small tumour on one of my lymph nodes.  Touch wood, everything can be removed and nor further treatment.  Worst case scenario will mean a further operation on tongue and skin graft to rebuild and radiotherapy.  What a time to be diagnosed although the rest of news does make you forget!  Hope you and your family are all well xx

  • Hi Cills

I have just today had a call from my oncologist she wants to get going with my treatment but I am not now having the Chemotherapy as it wrecks your immune system . If I totally needed it I would have to wait for my treatment to start ( that's how I understand it ) she is going to explain everything to me on Thursday in a meeting when she will also tell me my treatment plan . I said will I get the chemo later she said no with head and neck it works alongside at the same time . Anyway I'm happy to be getting started . I don't known my final staging yet but preliminary findings have me at stage 1/2 I also have it in my lymph . It's such a crazy time I have been in the house for almost 14 days  ..... 3 months to go ! Yikes . Hope you operation goes well .. keep me posted x x

  • Good luck Ginny, I will be in touch! xx

  • Hi Gina. I have read some of your posts. When you have time, do you mind to describe a bit more your first symptoms? Also, the lamp on your neck, was it painful? Did your voice changed? Did you had any fever?

    Thank you

  • Hi Ginpo

    i hope you're okay

I'm sorry to jump on this ,

Im currently waiting on further tests as an MRI has shown 2 abnormalities on my epiglottis and another area , plus a swollen lymph node

I had a camera put down my throat in March which came back normal ?
I'm so scared , I honestly don't know where to turn or who to talk to

My GP said she will refer me for another camera on a 2 week wait

I'm finding this waiting so hard

I would really appreciate any advice ?

    Many thanks

    Hugs

    Rachel

  • Hi Ginny,

I am currently under ENT. I developed two lumps in my neck about six weeks ago. I went to my GP who refered me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound found two "masses" in my neck and referred my to ENT. I went to ENT last friday and saw a consultant. She sent me for a further ultrasound and a biopsy. I then received a phone call asking me to attend ENT on monday which I did and saw the head consultant. He then asked me to return on saturday (25th July) so that he could put a camera down my nose and throat. I then receied a phonecall asking me to go to see the consultant for the camera on weds morning. I was also then asked to go and have a CT scan weds night. The camera was done and the consultant explained that I had a lump below my tonsils and above my voicebox. He actually showed it me on screen and it was strange looking. I had asked him on monday why they were doing all these tests and he expalined that somebody my age (52) shouldn't be getting lumps in my neck and that he suspected it was cancer. Now after all that my question is how did you discover it and what did they do to find the cancer and treat it?

    Thanks

    Paul x
