Neck dissection +

Hi all,

This is my first post so I'll start by wishing each and every one of you good health!

I'm due to undergo surgery later this month, which will involve a neck dissection, tonsils removed and 3 teeth removed (in case radiotherapy is needed later on). I don't mind admitting that I am really starting to feel scared by it all. I've read some of the possible risks with this procedure which worry me a lot.
Add to all of this, I'm supposed to be getting married on 06/06/20 which I'm praying I'll be fit for.

Can anyone that has had this treatment or similar share their experiences please? How long did the recovery take? Was it successful? Did you have any of the nasty side effects?

sorry for the lengthy post, but I want to hear the thoughts of the people that have been where I am.

Thank you all and best wishes,

Jesse

  • Hi there Jesse

Welcome to the site and the club no one wants to join. You'll find were a friendly bunch who can offer support and tips to help you through this tough time.

My hubby was diagnosed with SCC Tonsils with lymph node tumours in Dec 2015 and has now been in remission and cancer free for 3 1/2 years. He had his treatment the other way round - Tonsillectomy, 4 teeth removed, 30 sessions of radiotherapy and 5 cycles of Cistplatin chemotherapy. Then 3 months later he had a right sided neck dissection. I have to say that getting over the neck dissection was a walk in the park compared to the radiotherapy and chemo. In fact he had the surgery on the 4 th July and then walked down the aisle for our wedding on July 16th ( much to everyone's surprise including the Surgeon!) His best men had arranged to get him there even if they had to carry him !
Other people will probably give you their experiences as everone is different but please feel free to ask any questions you may have

best wishes and keep us posted

  • Hi Emma,

Thank you replying, you've actually put my mind at ease quite a lot! Particularly over the recovery from the op. I'm guessing (and hoping) that your husband didn't have any lasting side effects from the ordeal? I'm really happy to read that he is in remission!! That's great news. I hope that continues too.

Also, I'm hoping that you've recovered too. I'm aware that you, as our partners, go through a great deal too.

    Thank you, once again,

    Jesse

  • Hello Jesse, I'm pleased you feel a bit better for reading Emma's post.   I had a tumour removed from under my tongue, and a neck dissection to remove lymph nodes as a precaution, which after analysis showed no further spread.   I had my op. on 8th Jan. and back home the next day.   Obviously my tongue and neck were sore for a few days but nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. I realise you're having your tonsils removed which is a bit different to my op. but I imagine all oral surgery carries similar problems.   I've been back to work now for three weeks now and I'm really pleased with the way it has all gone. A few little changes to get used to but nothing drastic.

Try not to worry too much, I'm sure your big day will be as planned. (my daughters birthday same date)

    Take care,  Colin.

  • Hello JesseJames,

I'm wondering how it all went?

And your wedding plans ... what a shame Covid scuppered them. Have you planned your wedding again now that restrictions are being eased?

    Roger.
