Not sure I can do this :(

I'm struggling with the diarrhea. I nearly passed out on loo last night the pain was so bad. I'm wondering if it's dairy that's causing it as that's mostly what I had to eat yesterday. Also orange juice as craving sweet drink as water was starting to tast yuck. I started treatment on 19th Feb and not sure I can go on with it. I'm starving and have lost weight due to eating mostly dry bread and water. Yesterday I was so hungry that I tried poached eggs on toast, beef noodles for lunch, a couple of chocolates. I had cheese on toast for tea, and some Angel delight for dessert. I'd been in bed exhausted and weak all day. Come midnight I experienced the painful episode on loo. Took Imodium straight after. But I'm now lying in bed starving but don't know what to eat without worrying I'll be suffering on loo again.

  • Hi kajay sounds like your hardly eat then trying to fill yourself up. Poached eggs good idea cheese on toast not so good. You kneed to find somewhere easy on your stomach if you haven't eaten much for ages...

  • Yes, you're probably right. I'm going to try a non dairy diet. More meat and potatoes. I thought that I'd only have the bowel issues for first week or so of chemo. But it looks like it's ongoing throughout whole treatment sessions. I didn't know that :/

  • Normally what you get first session happens every other one it can vary though as you say depending on what you eat. Good luck with your food and treatment..

  • Thanks for reply.

And chemo type drugs too. I'm on Combi of

    T - Taxotere (docetaxel)
    C - Carboplatin
    H - Herceptin (trastuzumab)
    P - Perjeta (Pertuzumab)

T and P apparently known for the extremely common diarrhea side effects :/

  • Oncology or nurse should be able to put you on something to help. I was other end to you sick all time, problem is I've other med issues so couldn't have meds to help. Imagine 10 days sick day and night and trying to keep emergency medicines down. Like i said before be careful what you eat if anything causes problems keep clear till treatment over. Good luck and best wishes for the future....

  • Oh poor you :/ That must've  been horrendous. I only feel queasy when I've got stomach ache prior to going to loo. But, other than that the anti sickness meds worked. I've stopped taking them now. Hope you're on road to recovery, and thanks for your positive comments.

  • Hi again just remembered keep clear of orange and grapefruit, fruit and juice. And bio yougert, cheese, anything that can have live bacteria can react very bad, the juice is strong acidic again can react..

  • Hi,

Talk to your care team but remember to eat little and often throughout the day and night. Almost anything you can keep down to keep up your calorific intake and keep hydrated - that was the advice my oncologist gave me.

Homemade  fruit  or veg smoothies (avoid citrus!) - I'm not diary intolerant so homemade thick shakes made with peanut butter, bananas, strawberries and cocolate powder (not necessarily all together). Ginger biscuits, cake and especially chocolate (again little and often) all helped. Forget eating healthily for now, great if you can eat healthily but the priority has got to be getting calories and water into your body.

    Good luck!

  • Hi,

I'm on different type if chemo so not sure if I can help.  I started with water and dry toast.  Trying to eat a healthy but light diet and small portions eg mashed potato chicken and broccoli,  greek yoghurt and blueberries.  My hospital told me to contact them if I had constant diarrhoea or sickness as they can try different drugs   Is that an option for you?  Macmillan also do a recipe book, but you need to feel well enough to cook.  I've also bought some ready meals and frozen them.

Great advice in posts from others.  I'm also drinking lots of green tea and ginger.

Hope things improve for you and so sorry to hear your suffering this.

    Sending kindest thoughts

  • Hi Christine, it's calmed down quite a bit, but not stopped completely. I'm due to see my Oncologist for review today, so will see what they say. I haven't lost my appetite. But, I do think I'll have to start cutting out things that might be aggravating it. I'm thinking certain dairy and certain vegetables may not be helping so will cut them out to see if it helps. Thanks for your advice x
