PSA Descending after Biopsy

Hi,

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 9 months ago. I had 2 biopsies which confirmed the diagnosis but showed it not to be very aggressive. At that time my PSA level was around 6.7. Since then it has been decreasing month on month...I have 3-monthly PSA tests... and it now stands at 3.8. I am not having any treatment as I opted for active surveillance, I am wondering how to interpret these descending PSA values.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help

  • Hi George. Welcome to the forum.

Are you on any medication to shrink your prostate, such as Finesteride or Tamsolusin? Or maybe you're having hormone treatment?  These can lower one's PSA.

Or maybe you are one of the very rare people who have a spontaneous remission: Mystery! The Vanishing Prostate Tumor

  • Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. However, I am not taking any treatments at all...apart from statins. Also, prostate symptoms seem to be reduced. I have been unable to find any information about reduced PSA following biopsy. Perhaps the surgeon was too enthusiastic during the biopsy? I am scheduled to see the consultant again next July...meanwhile my graphs seem to predict a PSA level of around 3.5 by then..so levelling off and lower than it has been at any time over the last 5 years.

It does look like the biopsy triggered this response. I read the link that you provided...it seems to show that this response  is possible but not regarded as very likely. The only unusual thing in my medical history has been a tendency towards benign tumours..probably around a dozen during my lifetime...only one, a rodent ulcer, was malignant and that was removed about 6 years ago.

    Best regards
