Liver cancer

My mother in law has been told today that she has pockets of cancer in her liver. This was after feeling unwell the last couple of weeks, blood test with the doctor then referred to hospital for more blood tests and a CT scan.
consultant said he was very sorry told her the news but has come away from the hospital with very little information!
my sister in law was with her and has no information for the family? Is this normal? What if any is the next stage of contact with doctor/consultant or hospital to discuss how advanced the cancer is, primary or secondary and any treatment required. We have all been left very confused and in limbo wondering what to do next?

  • Hi Mojo.

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother in law's diagnosis. Something similar happened to me - I went in to hospital with a fever that was thought to be related to a gall bladder infection but was told my gall bladder was fine but after a CT scan they had noticed multiple lesions on my liver. I was told at that point that they suspected it was secondary (metastatic) spread to the liver and that when this happens the primary cancer is usually in the digestive system somewhere, so I was scheduled in to have a colonoscopy and gastroscopy to try and find the primary.  The two procedures were scheduled about 14 days later. The colonoscopy was clear but the gastroscopy came back with a finding of cancer in my oesophagus.

I imagine the immediate focus for your mother in law will be to find where the primary is and then that will drive the treatment plan so hopefully you will hear about next steps soon. The hospital usually communicate with the GP surgery so perhaps giving your mother in laws GP surgery a call may help get some information. Or if you have the name of the consultant at the hospital perhaps they or their department could help give more information.

I hope you are able to get some news soon as I know how worrying it is when you dont know what is going on.
