Melanoma diagnosis

Hi today I finally got the news that the lesion they removed 3 to 4 weeks ago is in fact a milignant melanoma it is 1mm. My dermo told me that 0.8mm is excellant 1mm is relativley good she also said that it is at the thinner end of the spectrum so hopefully another good thing. Am I right in thinking this puts me at stage 1b based on the staging. They are getting me an appointment for a wider local excision and probably will offer a SNLB. I am just praying that it hasnt spread to my lymp nodes. I am a worrier and iam not really coping with this every little twinge and ache in my body I put down to metastic spread. I no there are alot worse diagnosis but I just think 1b is a precursor to worse to come. I apologise for being this way but dont no how to feel about this. Yes my wife tells me its a good sign that its 1b but i just think it will be worse.

Thanks for listening

  • Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with melanoma and I can understand the worry it's causing. You are right that a 1b diagnosis is early stage so the chance of having any recurrence after surgery is very small. Try not to focus on the Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy bringing bad news - the odds it will be clear are good. I have been a Stage 3 melanoma patient for many years and I'm still here fit and healthy so your diagnosis isn't as desperate as may first appear. I will send you a friend request so we can chat by private message. Good luck with your surgery and results.

  • Thanks that would be nice to chat.

  • Hi mysticraincloud just to give you an idea, "hopefully. ". My wife got a lump on her top lip thought it was a cold sore. Treated it it went down, few days later it came back kept treating it started getting bigger went to Dr straight away told cancer,. Couple of weeks saw specialist he offered to cut it out straight away i was sat there watching he had to go right through the lip and about 6mm wide to remove it stitch up sent home had stitches out week later done. That was over 10 years ago no problems at all since. Billy

  • Thanks for the reply and iam glad that your wife had no more issues. I am very positive with other peoples problems but when its my own I am a worrier. Ive had mine cut out which iam told is good. The next step is to cut some more out just to be sure and a probably a lymp node biopsy. Thats the one iam concerned about iam told its a very low chance that it has spread but still iam a doom sayer when its me. I think i suffer with a touch of the health anxiety. Anyway hopefully it will be fine.
