Very high psa

Hi I'm Kate

My partner had a blood test on 30 Dec 19 we had an appointment with a consultant on the 2nd Jan 20.  My partners PSA reading was 2000.  He has a biopsy next week. We are so up in the air because he has had recent pain in his back and groin. Anything positive would be a comfort.

    Hi kateh specialist won't be able to do much without all details, psa is not an accurate way to check prostate. It can vary a lot. He probably will need to have scans..do you know if the cancer has gone other places. I'm not try to scare you, mine has gone quite a few different places. I was diagnosed Feb 2016.

    I was diagnosed in November last year with advanced prostate cancer with a PSA of 3000, I am 52.I had no symptoms other than a intermitent severe hip pain. Looking back over the last maybe 5 years there was so many things that I can now put togther like perinium pain, back ache ,hip pain that make up a diagnosis but on their own dont mean anything.As a paramedic I have researched the hell out of this. There is so much information out there that it can be boggling. All I know is that it took me a while to accept it and I cry every single day but I am bigger than this and have the family, friends and will to hit it head on. I quickly learned to asked questions and not to dwell on what may be but concentrate on now.

     

    The PSA is just a number after diagnosis and basically means that at that level it will have spread, so the next thing is where and what are we going to do about it. That will have put your partner on hormone therapy (tablets then injections or maybe straight on injections) This will make him have hot flushes, maybe put on some weight, grow boobs ( Im going to M and S for a fitting with a friend who is in the position for a giggle) ,I cry at anything now but I haven't started looking at soft furnishings or scented candles yet.

    You managed to get a fast appointment with your oncologist I don't see mine until tuesday the 14th of jan.

    Look into CBD oil , it is a oil derived from the cannabis plant with not cannabis effects at all but it has proved to help with anxiety and sleep etc and can be purchased on line and it totally legal. 

    To finish on a positive note, I immediatley went onto a plant based diet and cut out dairy and red meats which was hard for a canivore like me. my second blood test was a PSA of 848 so its heading in the right direction. And there are stories of fighters living on great after 5 and 10 years plus so fight fight and fight again.

    Hi Tony57. My psa was 1581 diagnosed Feb 2016 prostate gone to lymph nodes, spine, ribs, pelvis and a lung went on hormone therapy. (decapeptyl) for life, had cemo (docetaxel) at beginning,. And nead more over time. It's uncurable, i just live with my uninvited guest. If i can give any info please let me know.............. Billy

    Hi Billy

    So far all I know isthat it is my hips, ribs, shoulders and long bones. I had a scan looking for soft tissue ie liver lungs etc and expect to get those results this Tuesday when I see oncologist for the first time. My friends think it odd but I have called my cancer Robert because when I was a young boy I had an imaginary friend called Robert that was always getting into trouble. And it helps having a name to shout at.

    Hi Kate, I had a ‘well man’ check-up at the doctors last July and had a psa of 19 small compared to many I have seen, but high enough for the doctors to have further investigation.
    After reading much information the psa is only an indication of a problem. The real identification came from a biopsy and scans. It turned out through the biopsy, I had a Gleeson 4+5=9 (the highest group grade 5) which is high, and an MRI scan, that found out that some cancer cells had gone into my lymph nodes. I also had a bone scan which was clear.
    Initially, my oncologists was going to remove the prostate but as some cancer cells have come out there is no point. The other option was radiotherapy but that was also out, as I have Crohn’s Disease (inflammation of the bowels) (My brother-in-law had radiotherapy 8 years ago and is doing OK!)
    So now I am on chemotherapy. I am on my fourth cycle this week with another two to go. I am also on hormone therapy and will be for the rest of my life.
    It has been hard for both me and my wife, but we have come to terms with it and what it entails and both know ‘it is what it is’.
    We are living our lives as normal as we can and are looking forward to when my chemothrapy finishes. 
    When your partner gets the biopsy and scan results, talk to your oncologist about all the options (Do not be afraid to ask any questions!!! No mater how stupid you think they are!) My oncologist is very open and tells us as it is and really puts our mind at rest about what to expect, and what my limitations are going to be.
