Vaginal Cancer

I have just been given the bad news that I have vaginal cancer just below my cervix. As I have had a lot of smear tests and colposcopy appointments the last two year I'm still in shock this was missed! From what they can see now they are hopefully it's an early stage (the area that they saw at my colposcopy was very small and I don't have any symptoms). The most likely treatment is radiotherapy and not surgery. As this apparently is a super rare cancer especially my age group (I'm 32) not sure if there is anyone here to share their experience with me? I'm super anxious that they will find other areas or that it has already spread even though they said it's very unlikely.

  • Hello EveRay,

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the fact that it was missed despite you having had lots of smear tests and colposcopies. It's reassuring though that this seems to have been caught at an early stage and that the most likely treatment will be radiotherapy rather than surgery. We have information on vaginal cancer on our website and you can read more about this on this page. Find out more too about treatment for vaginal cancer here including this section on radiotherapy.

I also hope that you will be able to connect with others here who have had this rare cancer before and that they will share their treatment experiences with you.

If you have any questions, our nurses are also available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (but the helpline is closed today and on 1st of January).

Wishing you the very best for your treatment. I hope it all goes well.
