Tonsil Cancer

Hello everyone

I have this week been diagnosed with tonsil cancer which has spread to one lymph node in my neck. I understand it is stage 2. I'm a 37 year old man from Kent but have been living in Australia since 2003. I have a beautiful wife and daughter and Boston Terrier dog.

At the moment I think the news is still setting in. I've been very scared but am up for the fight. I've read about a lot of posters experiences and must say that this forum has both inspired me and compelled me to open up. You're all so brave and very decent.

I am yet to understand the cause of the cancer and therefore I don't know my treatment plan. I discovered all of this after a long journey to understand my sick health of recent times and was always told by a terrible ENT in Syndey that it's not cancerous and a Tonsilectomy at end of Jan would suffice. My gut told me otherwise and an amazing ENT in the Gold Coast gave me the time for a second opinion and confirmed it is cancerous. I had a CT and PET scan the next day which confirmed I have cancer.

The biopsy taken is inconclusive. Should this worry me? I understand not? I think I'll need a partial Tonsilectomy to get a larger sample size if Biopsy remains inconclusive after further testing. And then my course of treatment will be decided. I am prepared to go through the full process as no news I've had has been good news so far.

Appreciate your insights and support guys. And all the best to you all that are in the fight.

  • I should also mention that once you have that plan of attack and get stuck into it things become a lot easier to process mentally.  My dark thoughts are few and far between now. They still come, I just label them as fear and watch them move on. Shrink tells me just don't dwell in them and they cannot effect you. Easier said than done i know.

  • Hi Mike, unfortunately I got more bad news today, I have lymphoma cancer in the left side of my neck and possibly in my abdomen. The good news is that it's treatable. I'm having surgery on the 16th on my neck and throat (right side) then chemotherapy after then radiotherapy. I hope to get my results for my abdomen on Wednesday but the consultant thinks that it will be the same (lymphoma). Yes I'm watching Arsenal v Leeds.. at the moment, Fan cup. 1-0 down at the moment but where playing well.

  • Sorry to hear BB. Not the news you all were hoping for. That it is treatable is great news. I'm very pleased to hear that and to see you're cracking on with things ASAP. Will you be getting radio on both sides of your neck? RE the chemo, everyone is different but I'm through round 1 of Cisplatin and Etoposide and it has honestly not affected me too much. I know it will get tougher once radio starts on 20 Jan. But each day as it comes. That's all I'm going. I'm sure youre doing the same.

    please stay in touch.

  • I'm not sure at the moment it took me by surprise, I will hope to get abit more information on Wednesday. Unfortunately I now will need to let my 87 year old mum know, I was trying to shield her from it but it's not possible now. Glad to hear your doing well God bless you. BB

  • From my recent experience (and I think a lot on here) all I can say is that the period during the not knowing and figuring out the right treatment plan is the toughest mentally. That said, I'm early in treatment and have a way to go but its really been so far so good. Mentally I'm doing a lot better and sleeping well. Once you know more I hope you'll be the same.

Sorry about having to tell you Mum too. Calling my Mum who lives in Kent all the way from Sydney was the worst thing I've ever had to do. But she's taken a lot from my positive approach and the team I have. She'll be with me in Australia for February which is when things will get harder for me.

The conversations are tough. I hope your Mother can find strength and optimisim that you'll fight through and come out well the other side.

    Take care BB

    Health and Strength

    Mike

  • Thanks Mike, I'm feeling mentally strong and won't give in without a fight. Mum's a fighter too she's one of my biggest inspirations. I wish you well and hope them terrible fire's can be brought under control asap. I'm also visiting Sydney next year for a wedding and would like to meet up in possible. We live in the Leeds area of England but if your mum need's ow't (Yorkshire lingo) let me know. Thanks again Phill.

  • Hi Hazel, I have seen early post's that you have put on the chat room when I first saw the website. I hope all's well with you and getting back to full health. To give you an update I had a meeting with the consultant and the specialist on Monday and unfortunately the said that I have got lymphoma in the opposite side of my neck and abdomen aswell as HPV on the right side and throat. The good news is that it's treatable and it all starts next Thursday at LGI with surgery on my throat and neck and then chemotherapy then radiotherapy. The team have been fantastic and I haven't been worried at all and I can't wait to get started. I will send you updates later next week all the best BB.

  • Hi everyone, i just signed up to this forum, i wish everyone had a pleasant xmas, and new year!

I'm sorry you guys have had such a rough time and i sincerley hope you get better asap.

I've read about the issues and things you went through , or are currently going thrrough at the moment, but i was wondering how you were diagnosed?

To be fair, my mum, and grandad (on the same family) both had lung cancers and died, so i hate the c more than i normally did before! But it also scares me.

So i got sick back in june or july with sorethroat, nausea, sniffles ect which then subsided but i still had a cough with daily phlegm. Even now, i have issues with phlegm, coughing it up mostly daily even though i no longer have the sickness that i had then. I did progress to have pain in my sides and aches in my back sides and chest. So, i went tot he gp, had bloodtest and xray on my chest, xray was clear but i had mild eosinophils. 4 weeks after i had another with a crp test (for imflammation) and showed i had raised crp with lymphs? i then had another to further check if the crp levels dropped or rose, it stayed the same, but even had hiv and other tests to rule things out, which were clear.
Thus my gp is a little stumped. Awaiting an immune blood test but yesterday i found both tonsils were quite large, and still are today. I'm wondering if anyone else had anything similar as i can get a bit fo peice of mind as i do not know how long this has been the case.

They are not painful at all, but sometimes i get breathlessness and feel as though theres something in my throat.

Sorry for the long post!    best wishes  Mandy

PS: the immunity bloodtest results came back clear.. and i was told it was tonsilitus and started penicilin V which got changed to clarithromycin after an allergic reaction. The pain subsided mostly while on penicilin but could no longer take it. Tonsils are still swollen, one with a lump on one of them (the bigegr one) If i should post a picture let me know.
