Masectomy

Hi all,

Further down the line, I have Ductal BC 29mm tumour. Sentinel node scan this morning before masectomy, surgery tomorrow. Decided on masectomy rather than lumpectomy as have 2 liasons behind mass, so rather than a biopsy MRI scan on those which would delay surgery,  will have all removed and 1 lymph node under arm. Then depending on results of surgery the team will decide on treatment. Hoping not chemo but prepared for it . I also have 2 liasons on chest wall which will need radiotherapy. Also medication for HER 2 positive oestrogen diagnosis. Have had anxiety and insomnia which is normal I'm sure, especially after MRI and CT Scans to see if cancer has spread anywhere else. My worst was was the MRI as a bit panicky through that. This is my journey, just thought I would share, everybody's different. Glad I have come this far and you do feel better once you know and treatment starts. Amazingly strength arrives to see you through.

My best wishes to all. Will check in after surgery! Silver xxx

  • Hi there ..

Will be thinking of you on op day .. I had like you plumbed for total right masectomy, after being told I may have one anyway if no clear margins, so thought get on with total from the start ..

I found it amazing that I only needed paracetamol the next day ..  for me the easiest part when it came to pain .. under arm ached due to lymph nodes taken... but hope yours goes well ..

  • Hi Silver

I had my mastectomy yesterday (into surgery at 9.36am) and home a couple of hours ago, now relaxing in front of log burner with our two dogs.  Medication is still working so feeling fine albeit a bit uncomfortable moving.

1st October I had a lumpectomy and lymph node removal (4 lymph nodes) as they were so certain that the tumour was so small.  Sadly it was in all my margins and lymph nodes hence I had to have a full mastectomy yesterday.

Tired and achy but all is good.

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck for your operation tomorrow and hope all goes really well for you.

  • Hi, hope everything goes well with the surgery... xx

  • Thank you, in recovery now. A bit woozy but all gone well. Underarm a bit sore with drain in. Home tomorrow. Just pleased I have got to this stage. Treatment next depending on results of op.
Trust in my team to the best for me, all the staff so caring.  xxx

  • Hi Silverdays

Great to hear from you and hear all has gone well.

It's great to go from one stage to the next and get another one over and done with.

Hope you sleep well tonight and safe journey home tomorrow.

When do you get your results of the op?  I get mine on 7th Jauary and like you, next stage of treatment dependent upon the results.

    Wishing you a painfree recovey!!

    Rosie

  • Rosie I saw this and had to go back through a few other posts to see that you've been back for a mastectomy.  How did you feel about that? Going back again i mean?

Why do you ahve to wait a month for your results, is it because of the festive period?

I'll keep you in my thoughts, hope they got it all now x

  • Hi,

I hope  you manage to get a good nights sleep, and erything goes well for you once you get home.

I have opted to have a mastectomy on the 16th as hoping I may not need radiotherapy, I had a pacemaker/defibrillator fitted about 9 weeks ago. I am still waiting results from my HER2, they said it may not be back until after my op.

    Take care

  • Hi Embob

Results here take 30 days to be received, so I had my biopsies taken on 13th August, received the result on 19th Setpember and had my first op on 1st October.  When I was discharged on 2nd October I was given an appointment for 30th October for results and then when discharged on Thursday given an appointment for 7th January.  The reason they do that at our hospital is so that people have a date in mind straight away and are not put through more trauma if they receive a letter after one, two or three weeks - dare I say I prefer it as you have something to focus on from the beginning and waiting is easier for me if I have something fixed.

Obviously I wasn't happy when I heard on 30th October that it had spread to all my margins and I needed a mastectomy, however if all was clear then of course I'd have felt great I had the lumpectomy and nothin more radical.  However, this whole journey has been the strangest thing in my life and I am just working my way through it stage by stage and not getting myself into a frenzy about any of it as that won't achieve anything except get me stressed and there's no need for that as all is in hand.

When do you get your results?  How are you feeling?

  • Hey Rosie

I think we feel the same way in that respect - I've been pretty chilled throughout this journey, for one because i am determined not to add stress to the list of ailments! I also think that if i allow myself to wallow then i might not be able to wht myself out of it, so have decided that positivity is a better approach.  Even if the news is not as good as i hope, at least i won't have spent these last 8 or so weeks miserable, when the outcome will be whatever it will be. I feel like the docs will make the best decisions they can, and I'll be treated for whatever i need.

I am starting to get a bit nervous about getting my results (Wednesday) but in the plus-side at least I'll know what the next steps are.  I am reeeeeeally hoping  for no chemo,  but if that's what is the best course of treatment then I'll accept it.

How are you feeling? Did you have to have nodes removed as well this time round.
