VATS Lobectomy

Hi, saw thorasic surgeon on Friday. Thankfully results of brain MRI and groin ultrasound were clear.

The plan is for a VATS Lobectomy to remove the lower left lobe of my lung and I’m waiting on a date for surgery.

I’ve read a few posts about prolonged recovery times and levels of pain. I know everyone is different and I’ll need to wait and see how I am after the surgery but if anyone has any emotional or practical advice ahead of the op to help me prepare mentally and physically I’d appreciate it. Also any advice on protecting myself/my immune system as don’t want to catch a cold and compromise having the surgery.

I still can’t believe this is happening to me as prior to diagnosis I kept being told the risk of the lesion being cancerous was low as I’d never smoked and was only 48 but I also know I’m lucky it has been picked up early on a scan for something else as I’d no symptoms.

PS, Ladies - any advice on bras post surgery?  I’ve bought a couple of front fastening ones from M&S but don’t know if the band will rub on the wounds, would a supportive vest be better? (I’m a 38F and don’t really want to go without any support although if needs must it’s a minor issue compared to everything else)

Many thanks

Ruth

  • Hi Ruth,

Wishing you all the best for your surgery tomorrow. Hope you are feeling as calm and prepared as possible. I will be thinking of you!

  • Hi Ruth,

How did you get on?  I hope it went well. I had my surgery yesterday. They had to remove the whole of the left lung but all went well. I’ll be in hospital for a week or so and they still haven’t identified the cancer yet but it was lung cancer and not a secondary so that’s something.

Tough times but we’ll face them.

  • Hi Joy, so nice to hear from you and really pleased it went well for you. Mine went well too thankfully and I got home last night. I had a bad night on Wednesday with nausea and effects of the morphine but have been much better since then. The staff in hospital were all amazing and the surgical team were brilliant.  I’m struggling a bit with stairs but it’s good exercise along with the breathing/coughing.

Take care and please do keep in touch and let me know when you find out more. I’m due to have a follow up on 3rd Jan with the surgeon and will get the results of the lymph node biopsy then too.

  • Hi Ruth

Glad to hear yours went well. Such a relief! I’m off my epidural now and struggled a bit earlier on with the withdrawal causing palpitations but all is well. The staff here in the hospital are amazing.

I can now walk around my room but coughing is just to painful. Still, I can do the breathing exercises just without the cough at the end! . Don’t feel congested so hopefully I’m going in the right direction.

I’ll update you and wishing you a very happy Christmas.

  • Hi All,

I had upper left lobe removed in June this year due to cancer. I had post op complications and still recovering but I am pleased you both are doing so well sooo soon after your surgeries! Well done to you both!

    Warmest regards

    Kasia

  • Hi Kasia

Thanks for your message and getting in touch. Great to hear you are also going in the right direction. I have had a good night and morning and am walking around my hospital room trying to keep things moving,  so all is well just now. Sorry  to hear about your complications but glad they are no longer hindering your  recovery!

    Keep us posted.

    All the best
