tonsil cancer newby

hi all i'm 65 year old bloke ,whos newly unvoluntarily enlisted in the tonsil cancer club.

  • Hello Happybunny and as some of the member of the forum would say - welcome to the club that no one wants to join.

What I would say is that at least you'll be in good company here as we do have a great community of members who have been in your position and who I know will step forward to offer their support and advice.

At the top of the page here you'll see a magnifying glass in the blue bar which is the search function. If you use this to search for tonsil cancer you'll see that we have a lot of posts from different members.

I am going to tag in Ian aka [@Anchor1707]‍ and Hazel aka [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ to your post (hope you both don't mind!). Both these lovely people have been through their treatment and are out the otherside.

We also have a team of nurses that you can call if you'd like to speak to someone. They're available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    Best wishes,
    Jenn

  • Hi happy,

I'm Ian ( anchor1707) as mentioned by Jenn.

On one hand not great news you have joined our club but on the other hand the prognosis is good with a very high success rate of cure.
Aint gonna lie and say its an easy journey as it brings some challenges but you do get through it.
I often held on to the phrase light at the end of the tunnel and its so true.
So let us help you any way we can, answer any questions, even chat or happy if you would prefer to request friend and chat more freely on one to one basis, but up to you.

I started a thread here over a year ago and there are plenty contributions from quite a few and thats called "Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer" and under Living with Cancer. Pop in (will take a while now to read from start to finish).

I (as well as Hazel) kept a blog from the get go and found it therapeutic to map out my journey and how I progressed through  the various stages. Also highlight some helpful tips you might want to consider.
Anyways, I have posted a link to my blog and this should give you some insight into the road ahead. While it should help raise awareness of some of the challenges I also hope it gives you some re assurance that the light of the tunnel does exist.

  • Hi. About 5 weeks post treatment for T1N1M0 HPV+, left tonsil cancer.

I had surgery and radiotherapy (6weeks) but no chemo as I volunteered for the PATHOS trial.

... just had a curry (well, a mix of chicken korma and butter chicken) washed down with a couple of glasses of full fat milk.

taste is slowly coming back, and only need pain meds later in the day (after 4pm).

i was lucky as I could work through my treatment (3 mornings per week, but starting to increase my hours gradually, aiming to return full time in Jan). Only took 2 weeks off post tonsillectomy.

Recovery is hard, but my work has been awesome and my son and friends keep me motivated.

good luck with your treatment. Be kind to yourself and I totally recommend chicken Bovril! X
