Breast Cancer

Hi I'm a newby just thought I would say hi:)

  • Hi Livvy

I totally get your fear - especially having seen the effects of chemo first hand! Hopefullly results will come back clear for you and it won’t be needed - keeping my fingers crossed for you. Your job sounds like it was great - although I suspect very tough!!! It is good that you are still filling your time - when all of this settles down you might find other opportunities to fill your time and share those skills that you have built.

I got my next appointment through this morning - a vacuum core biopsy - the results of this will determine if I am facing lumpectomy or mastectomy (really panicking about the latter!). They told me to expect about a year of treatment and have already said high chance of chemo - I suspect that is as it already spread to lymph nodes but they have not said for definitive yet so there is always hope lol. I am with you - will def need a wig lol. My biggest lump was only 3cm so prob won’t need the once test. I am also not sure whether they will operate on both breast at once or one at a time - I am petrified of surgery :(

let me me know how you get on and whether you get the result you want. I bet we have a.ready passed each other on seaburn beach lol - keeping everything crossed for you and if we ever do meet up, it would be great to hear more about your job (I was tempted to study social work when I was younger but opted for psychology degree instead)

    xx

  • Hi Jax

i didn't have a core biopsy. As I say everyone seems to have different treatment and no two cancers seem to be the same. I've had two major surgeries. A total hysterectomy and a hip replacement when I tore the cartilage.  Honestly the fear is worse than the ops so try not to worry too much. A lumpectomy is nothing to stress about.  Is it in both breasts ?  I am on an American site and they all seem to have mastectomy and chemo as a matter of course over there.
mastectomy sometimes avoids the need for radiotherapy. Your surgeon will tell you if you don't need mastectomy.
if we need Chemo there is a great place in Sunderland. We will glam up together.  We have to do whatever we have to do. Let me know how you get on.  If you want to meet up for a chat just let me know.  We need all the support we can get on this horrible journey.

  • Hi Livvy

This really did make me feel better - I am probably imagining the worst about surgery lol. I did panic about childbirth once yet happily did it for a second time so hopefully my worries are more about not knowing what to expect - I need to remeber that us women are resourceful lol.

I have it in both breasts and lymph nodes on both sides. If we both need chemo than I think we should indeed do this together and get glammed up :) . I am at work next week but a meet up would be great - let’s keep in touch and see if we can arrange a face to face soon :)

    xx

  • Hi Livvy - have you managed to speak to nurse yet to determine next course of action? X

  • Hi Jax

i spoke to her this afternoon. She couldn't believe that I had not had an app to see oncologist. It will be 4 weeks tomorrow since she requested it and 6 weeks since my lumpectomy. She is chasing it up for me. Not expecting anything to happen now before Jan to be honest. Seems like it's not happening as I'm well recovered from the op.
I was in Seaburn today meeting a friend of mine that I haven't seen for a while. She had oesophageal cancer and was at deaths door. Had major surgery followed by chemo and radiation. Lost half of her stomach so has to eat little and often. She was 70 in June. Looks amazing and has just come back from India.  She goes all over so there is much hope for us. Xxx

  • That is fantastic - she is clearly a fantastic lady! Just shows what they can do :)

  • Oh and yes to a face to face. Maybe between Xmas and new year or before your op. Xx

  • Hi livvy

Sorry to intrude but my lump is 4.8cm and i know I will need surgery. Did they offer you a mastectomy?  I'm so frightened as it's so big. How could I of not noticed it earlier

  • Hi

mine is 5cms. They did not find out size of mine until after my op. Surgeon said lumpectomy or mastectomy but then said you do not need a mastectomy.  At my hosp in the North East any cancer over 4 cms is sent off to America for an onco score. Depending on the score they can then predict how likely it is to come back and whether radiotherapy is enough or whether chemo is also needed.  However they need to operate first to see exactly what they are dealing with. So I am still waiting for my onco score.
just breathe and go with it. Your team and your cancer nurse are there to support and advise you.  They can do a lot now. Xxxx

  • Also I had no lump to feel. I only noticed it through an indentation. Xxx
