Immunotherapy failed

Hello , my husband was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer that had already spread to his brain upon diagnosis in April. This was a huge shock as my husband is only 44 and just had a fit out of the blue which led to the diagnosis. He was given targeted radiotherapy on the 3 brain tumours and immunotherapy every 3 weeks since diagnosis but after recent scans we have been told that nothing has worked and the cancer has spread all over his brain and into his adrenal gland and spine. Immunotherapy  has been stopped and he is starting chemo on Tuesday. Without chemo he will only live weeks but with chemo we have been told he could live a year. I am so scared of sepsis and germs as we have a 10 and 5 year old little boys. We also have a little dog which I am concerned will cause greater risk of germs and infections. Can anybody give me advice on how to minimise risk with young children and general advice and experiences would be so much appreciated. Thanks

  • Hi, I am very sorry for your sad news. I have 3 children and a dog that loves to jump onto my kitchen units!

I'm doing everything I can to try and stop myself getting a bug or something worse.

I use lots of antibacterial wipes on door handles, light switches, TV controls etc, also I have hand gel where I sit so if my 7 year old comes for a cuddle after just sneezing into her hand I'm prepared x

  • I'm so sorry I have taken so long to reply, I hope your treatment is going well. My husband had 2 rounds of chemo and then a fit the day before his 3rd round. The chemo hasn't worked and his brain cancer spread even more , unfortunately it is in all the worst parts that effect personality, mood , memory etc. He has stopped treatment and given weeks to live. I am so angry. My 10 and 5 year old boys have councilling every 2 weeks. I am so mad as he wasn't given any treatment for nearly 3 months after diagnosis as the oncologist couldn't get a good enough sample of the lung tumour to see if he qualified for immunotherapy. They went directly through his chest in the end and the sample revealed he just qualified but I think he should have been give chemo immediately and then maybe immunotherapy later. I am even more furious that an X-ray in November 2018 revealed lesions on his spine and he was put on the 2 week pathway and he had 3 different scans and we got a letter in December 2018 congratulating him that the scans didn't reveal cancer and then less than 4 months later on 1st April 2019 he had a fit revealing lung cancer that had already spread to his brain and told he was stage 4 and terminal and then told it was in his spine. He had been badly failed and will lose his life aged 45 leaving behind 2 young children. He is on palliative care now and I am caring for him at home. I am losing him by the day, his amazing personality has gone and he is aggressive and my poor children are distraught x

  • I don't know what to say except for I can't imagine what you are going through.

Counselling is valuable for your children as my children lost their dad when they were aged 6 and 8.

Im sending you all my love at this terrible time.

Please feel free to contact me if you ever need a chat.
