Start of the journey: husband diagnosed with tonsil cancer

Hi, it's been informative yet frightening reading your posts. My husband is 59 and been diagnosed with cancer in his left tonsil. HPV+. It spread to a lymph node in his neck. Tumour 3.5cm. He is getting a tonsillectomy next week then starting treatment in December. He's been told he'll have 30 fractions of radiotherapy and two high doses of chemotherapy, one on day 1 of radiotherapy and one on day 22. He may need dental extractions and a feeding tube will be put in his stomach before treatment starts. He will also be fitted for a mask. It's all a bit overwhelming to be honest.

Has anyone had the high doses of chemo? He'll be kept in hospital overnight for those doses. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

You all sound amazing, dealing with the treatment so far. Hope we can deal with all of this too.

  • Hello Scotlady and welcome to Cancer Chat

I am glad you have found the forum informative but I can imagine some things can sound a bit frightening at the moment as it is a lot for you to have to take in after your husband's diagnosis. You have come to the right place though to talk to others who have been through all this before and get some tips and advice based on their own experience. You can find information on our website on tonsil cancer which I hope will answer some of the questions you may have at the moment. Our nurses are also only a free phone call away if you ever felt the need to talk things through with them and you can ring them on 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

You may have come across the incredible [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ on our forum. As you can see from her About Me and the discussions she started she knows a thing or two about tonsil cancer, HPV+ so I hope she will drop by and share her insights with you.

I hope everything goes well with the tonsillectomy next week and wishing the very best of luck to your husband with the start of treatment in December and the high doses of chemotherapy he will be receiving in hospital. We're all here for you if you need a chat!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Scotlady,

Maybe also have a read of my blog as well.

Was diagnosed with tonsil cancer and kept a blog from the get go as well as starting a thread here (Anchor 1707 my thread name) titled Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer and under Living with Cancer.

Lots of contributions and tips and advice there.

I also had the tonsil out and teeth extraction before radiotherapy but avoided the tube feed.
Some challeges ahead but as I always said, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Let me know if I can help further

    kind regards
