Waiting Breast Surgery

Well .....  nearly 5yrs ago had bowel cancer but now I am back again!  Unbelievable but nonetheless I have my bridget jones knickers pulled right up and ready to do this!  On a routine scan for liver (which turned out to they lost the lession - happy with that) they picked up a very small mark on my right breast.  Rushed through mammogram, ultrasound and 3 biopsies (ouchie!!!) all in about 30mins - can't knock the NHS :) now confirmed an 80mm x 1mm x 1.2mm lump, quite deep nowhere near the surface.  Have had not one sympton to even hint there was anything.

Anyhoooooo 14th Oct I go in for the radioactive contract which turns me into a smurf, followed on the 15th Oct wire guided surgery and removal of a couple lymph nodes to test, albeit at the moment they looking ok.  Then 3 weeks Mon-Frid radiotherapy (have had 6 months chemo but never radiotherapy) and yay the final part of this joy-ride is I will need to take tamoxifen - not read many good reviews on this, but we all different so hopefully it will agree with me.

Happy to say bowel still good :)

I am nervous though, and any info tips etc will always be welcome

Have a good day and be kind to yourselves

  • I can see I'm in great company

    thank you xx

  • Hi again - my story is ( to me ) amazing... and hopefully inspiration to many .

    My 1st ( ever )mammogram was 1st June .

Had to go for 2nd .. and biopsies ( ouch, ouch ) !

Diagnosed 26th June -mastectomy only option ( no immediate reconstruction ) and sentinel node biopsy same time ...

    1st August surgery ... 21st August result

all good - no lymph nodes involved , no treatment - ( chemo , radio ) .. just tamoxifen ..

    I feel lucky ( although minus a breast ) .. and I wish everyone good news ....x

... I would never had known had it not been for 1st ever routine mammogram ....

  • Truly amazing, and it's so wonderful you here positive and sharing with us all. It definitely gives me some comfort, I just want the surgery done now so I know exactly what I'm dealing with.  I handled the bowel (cancer) and liver (not cancer) fine, but I feel like with this I'm in a total unknown.  Maybe I'm being sensitive that it's a breast, the other two issues were internal, I don't know but I'm more concerned about this for some reason.  However, whatever is thrown at me I will deal with it, I know I'm strong and will accept and do whatever is necessary to win.

really thank you I appreciate the words of wisdom and understanding from everyone

Glad it's not just me that thought the biopsies were ouchie... thought I was being a big girls blouse!!

  • Noooooo - not just you ....

to me the biopsies were cruel ....!!

  • I haven't had the drain out yet. The nurse didn't come yesterday for various reasons, but I wasn't bothered about getting it out at all cost.  I'm waiting for her now, and still think I'm draining too freely and they will have to phone the hospital for further instructions.  Otherwise all still going well.

The book is written by. Professor Trisha Greenhalgh and Dr Liz O'Riordan, ISBN 9781785041877 if you're looking for it. You are braver than me watching video procedures!

Ill keep you posted on the drain situation.

  • Good morning, at least you comfortable with either decision on the drain, that's really important.  Please do keep me updated.  Very pleased to read all going well for you.

Yeah I know videos are not for everyone and like I say I'm really not even a blood person, however I just want to roughly know what I could expect to wake up to and not be too shocked.  I was always taught in life ... preparation preparation preparation... although it's worked for me so far, the mind is still a funny thing.  Trying to be mentally prepared I believe is half the battle won, or at least for me.

Hope all goes well today, I'm relaxing under a blanket on the sofa watching Netflix... looks miserable out so don't plan on moving . Thanks about the details of the book that's helpful and look forward to getting hold of it.

    Speak soon

    xx

  • Hi hope you ok. Well I'm prepped well partly, radioactive dye in place, marking done and back home, ready for surgery tomorrow.  Nice news they just phoned me and advised I'm now on the morning list whoop whoop I'll be done and home in reasonable time .

Cold and wet here today, so I hope you have not had to go out and keeping warm and dry

  • Hi,

Did you get to sleep in your own bed?

i really hope you feel as well as I did the day after surgery, even if it is adrenaline that is keeping you going.

I had the drain out, finally, yesterday afternoon. The nurse was undecided as I was still draining way more than 30mls.  She rang the ward where the sister said if I had been with them it would have come out on day 7. The nurse then gave me the choice of taking it out then or waiting until she could speak to the surgeon today. I decided my need of a shower was greater than any other consideration so told her to take it out. It wasn't painful and this morning I had the best shower EVER!!!

Today I put on normal clothes, i.e. Clothes that I pulled on over my head, not front fastening. I also wore a bra and sorted my ill fitting softie so it didn't look quite as ridiculous as it had before. When my friend came for lunch she said she would never have known from seeing me that anything was any different from two weeks ago.

I hope to hear that you are doing as well next time you write.

    Christine

  • Surgery all done, feeling great was actually quite easy, all intact too which is a bonus, just waiting lymph nodes results and fingers crossed they clear.  Surgeon is very happy.

Phewwwww not to relax and recovery well.

    Hope everyone is good xxx

  • Hi
just had my check up with results post surgery, whoop whoop all clear margin and three lymph nodes taken and tested, all three clear!! I'm absolutely ecstatic.  Just radiotherapy to do later and tamoxifen to discuss, probably at my appointment with oncologist 12th November.

Hope you are well, thank you for previous responses.

    Love JBee xx
