  • Hello M0nster123 and welcome to the forum!
I know that this is the forum that no one really wants to join but I also know you are in really good company here.

We have some fantastic members who have been through the diagnosis and treatment for throat cancer and you will get bags of support and information from them once we can get you connected.

This thread - radiotherapy for throat cancer - is very long but it lots of posts that will hopefully help you. Two members in particular I want to try and connect you with are Ian aka [@Anchor1707]‍ and Hazel aka [@RadioactiveRaz]‍. Both these lovely folk are now through their treatment for throat cancer and have written their own respective blogs on their experiences. I'm hoping as I've tagged them they'll respond to say Hi! and share their links with you.

We also have a team of nurses here at CRUK that you're welcome to contact for advice and support if you want to. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

We know that this is a really scary and difficult time but know that you're not alone. we'll do our very best to support you through this journey.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi G

I'm Ian as mentioned by Jenn aka Anchor1707..

As mentioned I kept a blog from the get go and I have posted the link below to share week by week my journey as well as plenty tips picked up along the way.

Understand its daunting and yup you do have a few challenges ahead of you, particularily on recovery but you get through it and I always thought of light at the end of the tunnel as its there waiting for you.
Prognosis for this is very good and very high success rate of cure nowadays.

Again as mentioned the thread I started Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer is long but there are plenty of people sharing experiences and offering support and good advice.

Have a read at both mine and Hazels blogs as well as maybe take time to wade through thread as bewtween all , yoiu should definately have more awareness of wee road ahead and some timelines. Lots to take in but also so many good news stories at the end after recovery so should also hopefully give you some re assurance and inspiration.

WIsh you well and please keep us posted on progress and feel free to ask away any questions you have or you just want to chat..
We are all here rooting for you.

Stay as positive as you can as that helps and you will see from my blog that i have a mantra of drink lots of water, drink again, then drink some more.

  • Hi there buddy, thanks for the reply, at present I'm waiting for a mask to be made for me, I think I'll be keeping my rear bottom molars as the cancer is down towards the larynx, they say it is contained and not in any glands or lumph nodes??

My main concern is being able to swallow and breath OK?

    G.

  • Hi

dont be afraid if the mask ,it’s there for one reason onky and that’s to save your life ,I gavemine a names spoke to it every morning and at the end if treatment brought her home she niw hangs in the garage handy to scare the grandkids with !

Re breathing u did a type of yoga breathing simple but effective breath in through nose hold for a count if 7 then slowly exhale through mouth.

Tio for mask making g ask for eyes and nose to be cut out it really does make a difference yiu get into a rhythm with the machine I used to watch it moving round me  ! As for swallow ok honestly that occasionally gets uncomfortable but yiu sort of swallow through it naturally

ask away anything you want to know in the old adagebeen there done it git the t shirt is applica  to many of us in here

  • OK thanks, I start my treatment on the 21st of Oct... I've kept my bottom teeth as the cancer is a little lower down in the throat..

I might have to have a food peg or rig but that might be on the 2nd week, I just want to get it started now..

  • Sorry to hear about your ordeals.

    The containment is positive news.

What were your symptoms that lead to this diagnosis?

  • Hi Gaz glad you’ve got a date mbest advise I can give you is eat as much as you can these next 11 days I ate lots of magnum ice creams ans out 11 lb in which I was glad about as I lost it all and some during treatment .

once treatment start you get into a rhythm talk to others in waiting room yiu are all there for similar reasons me n hubby met 2 other couples we are still in touch and meet up regularly

    kerp in touch Hazel x

  • Hi there Gaz

Just to say hello and welcome to our little group. Its the worst time waiting to start treatment and once you start as Hazel says you get into a routine. My hubby is nearly 4 years from initial diagnosis - scc tonsils with lymph node tumours and after 5 cycles of chemo and 30 fractions of radiotherapy plus a neck dissection hes been cancer free since July 2016 .He had a RIG inserted prior to treatment starting and it was invaluable. The treatment is tough and gruelling but worth it for the positive outcomes. Definitely read Hazel and Ians blogs and ask us any questions you might have and we'll try to answer them.

    best wishes

  • Hi there, at first I though it was the start of a normal sore throat like coming down with a cold, itchy and tickly at the back of my throat, this then turned a constant niggle as if I kept wanting to clear my throat, then the feeling that I had something stuck like food in the Adams apple area on the left side..

After a while of coughing and knowing something wasn't right I went to the doctors and I was referred to ENT, there was about an 8 month waiting list which wasn't good enough, I got back in touch with the quacks and she wrote another referral letter as I could feel it getting bigger, 5 days later I phoned ENT and prompted them on my situation and that if something wasn't done like a cancellation to see someone I could be dead by then.. A few days later I had a cancellation and then there was a whirlwind of tests biopsies and everything else that goes with it..

I was told on the 22nd of September that I had cancer and now after more tests I start my treatment on the 21st of Oct..

This all started in about April 2019
