Parotid gland cancer

i have a large parotid gland tumour which I strangely have only just discovered. After initially being assured it was probably benign, the biopsies suggest a grade 1 malignancy. I need radical surgery (probably next week), and then 6 weeks of daily radiotherapy. While I have been reassured the tumour is unlikely to be life threatening, I am very concerned about the threat ro my facial nerve. The surgeon hopes to spare it but cannot guarantee it can be preserved during the surgery. I am also nervous about the radiotherapy, which I understand is gruelling. Does anyone have similar experiences they can share with me?

  • Hi Nina,I was diagnosed with cancer of the Parotid gland and also in my inner ear on the RHS in Jan 2019. Since then I have had 6 weeks of radiotherapy, daily for 5 days a week plus Chemotherapy weekly. This unfortunately had no effect on the cancer. This was in February and March. Since then I’ve been on immunotherapy since end of June. This does appear to be having a positive effect. Next dose on wed. Oct. 2nd. It has been one helll of a year. More to follow

  • Hi, I’m Shirley

I had total parotidectomy 18 months ago, facial nerve was involved and lymph node.  This followed 30 radiotherapy sessions and a rollercoaster ride.  Forward to today..... face, scars and life is much much better.  Any questions?. Just ask.

Good luck, presume you have had the operation? Have you started radiotherapy?

    take care

  • Thanks. I am glad you are doing well. In the end, I was lucky - the operation went well, the facial nerve was not damaged and they then decided the tumour was benign. I therefore don't have to have radiotherapy unless I want to eliminate the small risk (7% over 20 years) that the tumour may recur, even though it is benign, at which point I would very likely be facing facial nerve injury. I really don't want to undergo radiotherapy so I think I will have to run that risk, since it is quite low.

  • hi Nina

great to hear it was good news, all the best for the future and don’t blame you for passing on the radiotherapy!!
