No beds to carry out urgent operation

Hi sorry for the long post but just wondered if anyone else was waiting for cancer surgery.

I was diagnosed with high grade endometrial cancer on Friday 6th September, so I know its only been a few days, but hopefully you will understand why im so annoyed / worried / frustrated.

I was told my 2 local hospitals could not deal with it and I was being transfered to another hospital.

My consultant said that as far as the mri and ct scans showed, the cancer was contained which is good news. But because high grade I was told I need operation ASAP followed by chemo and radiotherpy and they have already had meeting with the other hospital consultants and were just waiting for me to confirm I was happy to be transfered. The oncology nurse called the hospital there and then while I in the office to confirm I was happy.

My consultant told me the new team would be meeting Monday 9th September and I would receive a phone call either Monday afternoon, tuesday or today to arrange pre op appointment and op would be the next day. They told me the op would be this week or next week latest.

We had a holiday booked in devon for 2 weeks from 21st September and I was told under no circumstances could I go on it. So I've cancelled the hoilday and we've lost £1,600.

I've now had a letter today, 11 September,  from hospital saying i've an outpatient appointment on the 2nd October. It was a generic letter. not signed, no doctors name, no nothing. I rang admissions as that was the only number on the letter, and after beeing put through to various secretaries got to speak to someone who could help. I explained what I had been told a few days before. Her words were ' I cant comment on what the other consultant said, but we dont have any beds, they are all booked up until the end of October already so dont know what you expect me to do'. She didnt know who my consultant was (it could be one of several she said). I explained I am very worried but I got the same response and we went round in circles. I then called my old consultants secretary who said nothing further they can do as i've been transfered. Again, would not give me any further info. I called back the other secretary who said she would email the consultant and see if she can get earlier appointment for me, although there still wont be a bed so not much point.

I am so upset. Being told I've got cancer and getting my head around it, plus then building up to the operation which I thought was going to be within the next few days, telling friends, family and work, sorting out pet care and cancelling my holidays, its been a real rollercoster. I just glad my husband was in the room with me otherwise I think I would have started to think I'd dreamt it.

Just wondered if anyone else had been through this.

Kind Regards

Lorraine

  • Hello Lorraine,

I'm so sorry to hear about everything that's been happening for you recently. It sounds like a real rollercoaster and I'm not surprised that you feel upset and frustrated.

I hope that since you posted that your original Consultant has been able to get in touch with the new hospital to expedite your appointment. If not then I wonder if getting in touch with your GP might be an idea. It's possible that they may be able to find out who your new Consultant is and explain the situation.

It's far from ideal that you're having to deal with this on top of everything else. I really hope that you have some good news soon. Please keep in touch and let us know.

    Best wishes,

She has chased it up for me and the hospital called and emailed me yesterday to say they haved booked a new appointment for Tuesday 17th September.
