Low bowel cancer

Hi, have recently been diagnosed, following on from my first bowel screening test (which I wish I'd never done now), with a cancer low in the rectum with sphincter involvement.

Consultant said surgery would involve removing sphincter as well and consequently a stoma which is the last thing I want, he did ask if I'd have radiotherapy, probably, and is taking some more biopsies under general anaesthetic next week.

It doesn't help that nurses keep telling me about their 80 year old grandmothers who cope with a bag, maybe if I was 80 I wouldn't be so bothered but I've got 20 years till then!

Just wondered if anyone else been in similar position?

Thanks

  • Hi

I am so very sorry to hear your diagnosis, I just wanted to send warm wishes and hope someone can offer more information for you.  My thoughts are with you for the next hurdle to be faced.

I am a woman in my 60s currently awaiting more results following first colonoscopy and am humbled by the bravery of so many people.

    Jay x

  • Hi Jay, thanks, has all just been such a whirlwind, colonoscopy was 15th August and since then had 4 more appointments (CT, MRI, consultation and then pre op assessment for the further biopsies under GA).

I have already said to the consultant I won't have a stoma and yesterday received the copy letter he sent to my doctor, which mentioned that - don't know if he thinks doctor can persuade me otherwise, unlikely as I don't even know the doctors at my surgery, I never really need to go there!

Anyway, have an amazing holiday booked for 6 weeks time and nothings going to stop me taking that!

Good luck with your results, I hope all turns out well for you x
