New diagnosis - query about going private

Hi,

My wife has just been diagnosed with a melanoma, following the removal of a mole.

The size means that it just meets the threshold for needing further investigation, so she will need to have a lymph node removed to see if the cancer has spread, however, she has been told that it will be a 3 month wait, as she is not a high priority (due to the size of the initial find).

She has been told not to worry, as she's low risk, however, that the same as she was told when she went for the initial biopsy.

Additionally, she had to go to her GP 3 times before they agreed to refer her and then only because she insisted.

Our confidence is now quite low and we do not want to wait a further 3 months...

How do you go about getting the lymph node removal and testing done privately?

Would the NHS cover any of the cost, seeing as they seem not to have the resources available to do the operation sooner?

Thanks.

  • Well, we've been trying to get a revised date for the procedure, as they now agree that 3 months is wrong.

It then transpired that the consultant/his secretary did not send my wife's notes to the hospital.

So after many phone calls this morning, they have sent them to the correct person there now and hopefully we will get a call on Tuesday with details of a new timescale.

I'm completely appalled that unless you're totally on the ball, checking everything and chasing up, you can expect basic mistakes like this.

My mum had a similar experience with a lung cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

  • The hospital i was referring to is a center of excelance. I dont know if they let the name stay on maybe a bit to far if not put your foot down with your hospital .i was commenting to help you . Ive told you how it works its about funds not need

  • Hi Angie,

My wife has been told this week that a consultant would be reviewing her case and that she would get a date for her referral - I think the doctor was supposed to do the triage on Tuesday or Wednesday, but now it' going to be today apparently.

The consultant's secretary is not answering my wife's calls, but I managed to get through today and was told that she'll get a letter with a date for a consultation in 2-3 weeks (and who knows how long it will take for her to have any surgery after that).

If we ask to move to a different hospital, do you know if the whole process have to start again (presumably)?

EDIT: My wife has now had a call back and will be seen the week after next. I just hope they give her an early date for the procedure.

  • Hi,

To go to another hospital your wife will need to go to her GP and ask for a referral to another hospital - that would take at least 2 weeks. If it was me, I would wait to see the consultant at the appointment the week after next and see how long it will be for the surgery date. Hopefully it will be carried out within 2 weeks of the appointment. I've sent you a friend request - if you accept it I can send you a private message with more information and advice that will be helpful to you both.

    Angie

  • If you ring consultants secretary pay private you will get to see him in a few days

  • Thanks Angie; I think we'd both be happy with that, so we'll wait and see.

    I've accepted your friend request.

  • Good to know, Paul - thanks.

  • Hi,

For some reason messaging won't open for me. Can you send me a message & I will then see if I can reply to you.
