Queries about BC diagnosis

Hello, am new to this forum. Was diagnosed with breast cancer last week and told it was grade 1 invasive.  Good news except I was also told I have dense breasts and that the cancer had not shown up on mammogram at all. I am therefore having an MRI next week but no one has told me why, other than that I have dense boobs.

I've stupidly googled a bit and come to some conclusions which I am not sure are accurate. Is the MRI because they think its lobular carcinoma which shows up less? If so, is it more likely I have other cancers in my breast that have not showed up? Will the results show staging and inform treatment?

Can anyone put me right? I should have asked the Macmillan nurse today but stupidly feel that I'm fussing about it.

I'm 49 btw, still have young kids and just feel clueless about something so significant to our lives.

Thank you in advance

  • Hello,

i too have dense breast tissue....but I also had an ultra sound....try your hardest not to google anything, it will only stress you out....

grade 1 is early doors, that's good....don't worry about having the MRI, they are looking after you...

i know what you mean about asking the nurse and then not, I just want to scarper after my appointments! And only afterwards think....oh...I should have asked that!!

It will be the biopsy that will show up staging and inform treatment....this may well be done during your MRI? It may be worth ringing your breast care nurse with a list of questions....( much better than dr google) xxxxx

  • Hi Marlyn

    Thank you for replying.

I have had an ultrasound and a biopsy already. The cancer did show on the ultrasound actually. I guess the MRI is just confiming what they know already?

You're right, I should definitely ask the breast care nurse rather than googling.

  • I had it explained to me that the MRI scan shows the depth of what they have already found .. like a 3D version and also highlights of there is anything they need to do another mammogram on before they start treatment

  • Thanks Amp. Sounds like you may be going through similar process.

  • What I meant to add was that if you need a hand hold I'm here x

  • Thanks I will try to work out how to friend link x

  • I have a date for MRi on 5/8 and meeting with consiltant 8/8 to discuss results from MRI lymph node biopsy and potential op 20/8 .. depending on what is required

  • It feels like a wait, doesn't it. I have MRI this Thursday, not sure of results. I'm on holiday from 19th, so surgery as soon as I come back. I chose to have my holiday rather than surgery before because chances are its grade 1.

    How you coping?

  • I had a weeks delay on my results due to a course I couldn’t easily not do and will have a week away from next Wednesday .. so they seemed to have worked well with me on options that fitted in .. cancelling my holiday didn’t look like it changed much as there were some delays anyway .. there was a 2 week delay on mri in our area .. my extraneous stress was the unexpected lymph node biopsy as was swollen .. they said could be due to original biopsy as my experience of that wasn’t ideal with lots of bleeding .. I didn’t have a lump. Was an annual MRi due to family history

  • Hi Coconutbean,

This is my first post on a forum so bear with me! I just read your message and wanted to reply as I have had a very similar experience. I was diagnosed with IDC suspected grade 1 to 2 on 27/06 following an ultra sound and biopsy. My mammogram also showed nothing which they said was completely normal in younger women. I had my MRI the following week which was just to confirm the size, position and any initial indication of spread. As Amp said it’s like a 3D version to help them prepare for surgery. I found it really helpful to ask a lot of questions to the MRI nurse, it made me a lot more comfortable and calm. I hope both of your and Amp’s MRIs go well and you get more information soon. All the waiting is incredibly hard so I think it’s great you have a nice holiday distraction and time to get your body relaxed and ready for the next bit. I have a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on Monday so if you have any questions once you get to surgery etc. let me know. The treatment team are understandably very focused on each step as you go so it’s really hard to prepare or plan longer term.

    Xxx
