Breast cancer just diagnosed and worries

Hi everyone

I am Natalie and i am 37. I recently saw dr with a lump and 3 weeks later have had 2 biopsies and had results of 1 to say is cancer.

Cant get full update until 2nd biopsy of calcium come back but now been asked for 3rd biopsy tomorrow as another area want to check all in same breast.

I am getting some pains in my other breast and want the consultant to check this one too as family history of cancer. Mammogram of breast showed clear as did both but my tumour didnt show on mammogram either. Do you think dr will check  as a matter of course or should i ask about other breast?

Am terrified and fed up of waiting for all test results to come back. By time they are will be over 4 weeks since first visit and worried will have spread by time i have surgery.

I know they need to be thorough but i cant bear the thought of that thing growing in my body.

Suspect i may need a masectomy but hope to know moew soon. At clinic this afternoon so will try and get more info then.

Is it normal to wait this long?

  • Hi Nat,

I'm really sorry to hear of your delays but I think each NHS trust has it's own troubles so delays are sometimes inevitable.  I've been through the diagnosis and operation plus now on risk reducing surgery as I have the BRCA1 gene variant which predisposes me to Breast and Ovarian cancer.

All I can say at this moment, is that it's likely taken years for the cancer to grow, a few weeks delay should hopefully not have any impact on your treatment.  I also wanted the cancer removed right then and there, and I believe the NHS guidelines are for surgery/treatment within 4 weeks of full diagnosis which sounds as though this has not happened yet.

Family history is important as it was for me, so after you have the operation(s) and the cancer has been fully diagnosed (about 2 weeks after surgery) you'll be given your cancer treatment pathway plan.

Good luck and let me know how the Clinic went for you.  For me my timeline was approx 6-8 weeks from mammograms to operation but to be honest, it's all a bit of a blur.

    Good luck and best wishes

    Julie

  • Hi there and welcome to our little chat place...

I had a grade 3 ... and masectomy in July 2017 ... yes it's really horrible waiting for things to start ... but there's a lot goes on behind the scene... they get all the scan results .. biopsy results and everything else .. they have a weekly meeting where all the oncology sit .. and they go through everything and all discuss the best way forward for everyone ...

So don't worry to much about delay .. like Julie said ... it's probly been there a while ... and a week or two, is making sure you get everything done right .. and where you are now is the scariest part .. the wait .. on the day of my op, I was just like you ... get the little uninvited xxxx out my boob ..

There's lots of us breast lasses on here .. all different stages and treatments ... l came here 2 years ago now ... and this got me through, knowing I was not alone ...

If you feel emotional just go with it .. get it out ... but once that day comes get a pair of pink vertual boxing gloves on and join us all in the ring...ready to kick it's *** ... wer all in there ... think we scare that cancer sometimes .. those other breast lasses joined along the way, are still here ...

As you write on here I'm sure others will pop by .. [@Sandra123]‍   .. [@rileyroo]‍ .. [@Marlyn]‍ to name a few .. so any time you want to chat / vent / ask anything feel free .. Chrissie xx

  • Hi nat,

oh the waiting!! It's just horrible....the brain goes into its own little worry world....

in my experience whenever I've had to go and see a consultant and they need to check my " bad boob" they automatically check the other one and my nodes, I had my 6 month review yesterday from my lumpectomy and the surgeon checked them both out..very reassuring!

Trust in your health care team, they know what they're doing, they're following protocol and getting you on the right path...your talking an extra few weeks to set you right....

there are loads of us here...some right out of that tunnel you're about to enter..me? I'm coming out of that tunnel and can see the light...by eck it's a lovely sight!

You can do this Hun, we're right with you xxx

  • Thanks Julie. I know logically its been there ages but i feel sick knowing its still there invading me.

I am being referred for genetic testing so will let you know. I hope your next surgery is plain sailing and you can finally start to enjoy some normality again. X

  • Thanks Chrissie

It helps so much knowing you all understand and to hear you coming out the other side.

I saw my consultant this week and he has advised due to my age he is going to treat it more aggressively to try and stop it recurring.

I am getting an op which will prob be masectomy and chemo with herceptin. Thought of masectomy and chemo arent nice but its the herceptin i am worried about. Made the mistake of googling it and read 58% women suffer heart damage on it. I have a fast heart beat anyway but dr seems ok to give me it. Hoping someone on here can reassure me its not as terrifying as my google search!

I have 1 x 9mm tumour confirmed with a large area of pre cancerous calcium. Had further biopsy yesterday as found another 2 very small lumps.

Got mri tomorrow so hoping other breast is clear.

Thank you for your support and kind words x

  • Thank you Marlyn

I think i may have chemo first with herceptin and surgery after. Not  sure why but dr says may do it opposite way round for me. I read you have been on same treatment... how has that been for you?

Terrified of herceptin but know it will keep my cancer at bay so gotta give it a go. Googled it which was a terrible mistake.

Not worried about losing hair etc though its amazing the perspective you get when faced with cancer.

Got mri tomorrow so hope no more cancer found. What i have got confirmed so far is very small and early so hope there are no more surprises!

You sound like a fighter and i am thrilled you are starting to come out the other side of this nightmare.

I hope this is just a horrible memory for all of us in the future x

  • There Is no need to worry about herceptin ( had my 4th today) you will get a heart scan before you start on it to make certain your heart is ok, then you will get another after a few more herceptins...they will monitor you closely, and make sure your well throughout....

iv been ok.....the usual ups and downs....carried on working....a friend of mine was on the same regime as mine and she was hard core....tolerating chemo really well, even going into work straight after chemo, I was in awe of her...

    xx

  • You both sound tough! I hope I can go to work as I enjoy it and it keeps my anxiety at bay.

Only concerned about herceptin as already have minor heart issues eg fast pulse and palpitations was even taken off anti histamines due to it but its intermittent so will look fine on scan. Got to try it though as alternative is not great.

Thank you though, glad you have had no problems with it and it is reassuring. Am trying to get fit and eat better in readiness to help body cope too

    No more alcohol either.

How much longer do you continue treatment? Hope i can be half as brave as you are.

Thank you for your support too x

  • Brave is being scared out of your mind and jumping in anyway, you'll be brave too my love ...just wait and see.....

i have 5 more herceptin to do, and on meds for hormones and bones.....the bulk of treatment is behind me.....honestly....The time will fly!

work kept me focused too xxx
